Letter sent to NY Times, Moscow Times, MosNews & the Washington Post.

I am writing in response to the negative press that the recent case of child abuse against a child adopted from Russia is receiving. I am appalled by this story and others like it. It is horrible to hear of a child that is abused and neglected at the hands of his own parents. It sickens me that there are people out there that would do this to a child.

However, as awful as this story is, it is the exception to Russian adoption and not the rule. There are thousands of children adopted from Russia into loving homes in the United States each year. I know, because one of these children is my precious son Gabriel. We adopted him from the Moscow Region in 2005, and he is the absolute joy of our lives. To see how he has grown and thrived in his new home warms my heart. I cannot imagine our lives without him. He is smart, funny, active, curious, and such a blessing to us. Our adoption was a wonderful experience, and we enjoyed spending time in Russia and embracing the culture of Gabriel’s birth country.

I understand that stories like these are sensational and attention-getting. I only wish that the media would make as much time for the positive and uplifting stories out there, and there are many. I belong to a few online adoption forums, filled with people who would be happy to tell their stories and put a positive face on International adoption.

It saddens me to think that the few horrible stories out there will prevent thousands of deserving children from finding permanent, loving families. I hope the actions of a few will not impact these children in a negative way. If Russian adoptions are shut down, it will be the children who will suffer.

Please consider showing the happy success stories of the 99.9% of families who have welcomed these children into loving, stable, nurturing homes.

I've been emailing like crazy. I have borrowed some passages (mostly statistics) from some of the letters y'all have posted here. I pray this will help. Everyone needs to know that these horrible cases are not the norm. The norm is loving people wanting to provide loving and safe homes to children in need. Dear God help us to be heard and understood. Open up the ears and the hearts of anyone who can help these adoptions to continue.

cthvash..the Russian press is still there and more will be coming to cover the next court date which is in early March.

This is why it is so important to get the news out here now.

we need to keep it in front of them...they need to see how wonderful IA is..the benefits..the happy children..and how loved and cherished these children are.

Please Post Responses Here

If anyone gets a response, please post and tell us about it.

It may take a week or so, but the more media we can get involved, the better chance we have of helping the children.

Did anyone get through on the phone # that the today show replied with? LEt me know and I'll call.

I've got a Vice President for news at CNN that is an alumni of our department, so I'm working on getting that information.
