Did you readopt your child/children?
Poll: Did you readopt your child/children. I will make this multiple choice in the event some readopted once, but not for others children.
PS. Thank you Waintinginnj for the poll suggestion and the questions. Vicki

Kentucky
Kentucky has changed there laws regarding. You no longer are required to readopt. However, they have not set up system to register your child which is a new law. We were able to obtain Certificate of Foreign Birth which has our names as parents on it.

We readopted so we could get a Certificate of Foreign Birth issued by our state. There was no requirement to do so.
This way we can put the original birth certificate away for safe keeping. In IL if we want more copies or later if Jordan needs a copy all he has to do is go to any county clerks office in the state and one can be printed for him with a state seal affixed.

I really need to look into this. In the back of my mind, I've always thought I would like to either readopt or get a recognition, just for the fact of obtaining a US birth certificate. My state doesn't require it and it's not needed for anything. It just would be easier to carry his birth certificate when travelling if I knew I could easily replace it if anything happened.

We didn't readopt, It wasn't required by our state and we were still able to obtain a state issued birth certificate without readopting.

We are actually in the process. Virginia requires 3 post-placement vists within 6 months of returning home and then you can file the re-adoption petition and receive a VA birth certificate.

We were going to re-adopt though it was not required in NJ. But the state changed the law so that you can get a NJ birth certificate (indicating foreign birth) without readopting by just applying to the state. We have submitted the paperwork but have not heard back (we were told the wait could be up to 9 months!). If there is a problem we likely will still do a re-adoption.

We plan on readopting even though it isn't required in MD. We were told by our agency that we had to have 2 post-placement reports done before we could do so. We just had the second one last night.

While it is not required in Pennsylvania, we intend to readopt to streamline things in the future. Getting a "replacement" birth certificate from Russia, for example, should the original get lost would be darn hard or impossible...

Our state does not offer this option, though you can file a petition for recognition of foreign decree and get a state birth certificate.

I have a question, and it still bothers me.
It is yet to be answered.. unless no one knows the answer. Those of you who adopt. Do you change the birthday? Like, example, maybe use the adoption final date as the birthday, on newborns.? I was just curious. And this readoption thing, I guess I dont understand that either. But then again, my daugher has always had a different last name than me. Cuz, I remarried. Thank you for your time. Jo |

JoEvand - The youngest child adopted from Russia had been about 6 months and is now closer to 9 months. Parents may elect to change a birthdate while executing the adoption in Russia if they chose to petition the court for the change. I don't get the impression that this is done widely, although some may elect to make that type of change for personal reasons. When a child is adopted from Russia their name is changed in Russia. Readoption is a legal function that some states require to recognize an overseas adoption or some people choose to do as another form of validating the adoption. There are several reasons that one may consider this including: easy access to vital records as the child grows, closing any potential loopholes to inheritance laws, as a celebration of the adoption with more US family members being able to attend, establishing a second court of record for the adoption.

I'm just coming back from the post office - I mailed the readoption documents this morning. It is not required in Florida, but I would like to get a local birth certificate for Colin. Let's hope that the application is complete... Another check on this endless To-do-list.
