I think they might be opening but very slowly. Shay, check with our agency. I just got some info form them about it. I think the problem is that they are so slow. Many families have left their programs for Russia after waiting upwards of 12 months without a referral.

For 2 years agencies have been taking applications anticipating that the supposed "new laws" will be passed in Georgia, or telling fmailies they can adopt under the "old law." We were one of the first families to get a dossier into Georgia around April of 2004. We waited a year and nothing happened, not just for us, but for most of the other families waiting too. I think there were maybe 5 total adoptions in Georgia in 2005 and only 2 infants. Things are moving VERY slowly in Georgia and there is no unified, standard process. We switched to Russia and were home with a child quickly. I would suggest being careful about planning to adopt from a country without a recent consistent track record of adoptions. We ended up getting about half our money back from the agency we worked with for a Georgia adoption, but it didn't make up for the heart ache, stress, and lost time. Then again, if it hadn't happened the way it did, we would not have eventually adopted the daughter we were truly meant to have!

Our agency opened with Georgia and we have our dossier at Georgia and Russia also. Our agency told us right away that we would get a referral from Russia first in their opinion. Referrals have been taking about 6 months for Georgia, but we did receive a referral in 4 months from Russia. I think if you questioned your agency and dont mind waiting longer, it would be fine. Just hope your agency is up front and honest with you about the timelines like ours was. The nice thing about Georgia is the 1 trip though, that is why we did both. Good luck in your decision!

There is a Yahoo group for adoption from the Republic of Georgia. You can join the group and see that not much is happening in Georgia despite what the agencies may be saying. You can find the group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/repgeorgiaadopt/messages

I spoke with D at our agency Shay and she said the country is a go, but I am VERY LEARY because of the concerns posted here and most everywhere else. I will probably not go that route... too unstable...

We also had wanted to go thru the Rep of Georgia. Loved the idea of such a young baby to bring home. and the well care they had (all fostered). Anyhow, they've been closed for a long time. Like others have said, I'd be very leery of them now if they are reopening. From what I also hear is that Russia may stop adopting in another year or so. Might go to only a foster care system. Anyhow, if you like this area... I would strongly suggest you get into Russia now. If you are unsure of agencies... I suggest a smaller company. I went thru a small one, would love to share the name of them. However I can't on the public forum. Anyhow, very fast adoption. 6 months. AND you deal directly with the owner. Anyhow, just remember one thing while searching for an agency, do a www.google.com search and try to find NEGATIVES on a company. There are always good comments, but you want to see how bad a company CAN be. You don't want to just be a NUMBER!
