Absolutely! I brought very thin Merino wool type sweaters and layered. I also brought thermal underware (the thin kind) and had a heavy winter coat.

I am a light packer. Brought 1 pair jeans (for plane and hanging out), 1 pair black pants and 1 pair beige cords. 3 or 4 sweaters, 3 long sleeve tshirts for under sweater if cold, plus thermals. PJs I used sweats and then I could use those also to hang out in hotel room and on plane if I wanted to change for the night flight.

Good Luck. BRING SWEATERS!

Merino wool is a great idea.

Get yourself some Silk long underwear too! You're going to need it under your trousers. It's great against the cold outdoors and releases heat and moisture so when you're indoors too. You might want to consider couderoy trousers as well. Better against the cold and you can dress them down and up.

Definitely bring things you can layer - I brought a few cardigans so when I was in the orphanage I could take it off easily - we found that many restaurants were really hot too. And I am a big fan of the heat and I was still hot. We traveled this week last year and temps were similar.
Happy packing!

We were there last month and going again on Sunday. I wouldn't bring any big heavy sweaters. In Nov. I wore turtlenecks and cardigan sweaters. Cords were great. I think I'm going to go buy one more pair to take with me. It is extremely hot inside, so you need to wear things that are easy to take off and put back on.

Wool socks could become your best friends! We went last December to the Arctic Coast, and a Russian friend insisted I take some, even if I had to borrow hers. They kept my feet nice and toasty.

I took several black skirts, several pairs of black tights, several white turtlenecks, and a couple of light cotton sweaters (along with the heaviest coat LL Bean makes and knee high boots). After I purchased my Russian hat, I blended in so well that people came up to me speaking Russian on the return trip.

Bon Voyage,
CindyC

I would say definately bring sweaters, or at least a sweater. But for a different reason than most are saying.

We were in Russia for two weeks straight, and my sweaters wore the best, meaning they did not look yuckie, even though I had to keep re-wearing them.

We went in December 2004, so it was very cold too. It really helped to have warm clothes under our coats. Brrrr.... (and I live in Minnesota, so I know cold)

I brought a few twin sweater sets. This way I was layered but they werent bulky and I could kind of mix and match them like Granimals over other things. Worked out great. I traveled in Oct and November and it was cold outside and warm but not overly so inside.

I also brought thinner wool socks. Warm but not too bulky. A few long sleeve tees to help in the layering process. You dont need a lot! Most Russians wear the same outfit many days in a row so you can wear that same cardigan over another shirt the next day and it's not biggie.

Oh yeah - wool socks were great. I also used sock liners for extra warmth and so that my socks could be worn a few times.
