Hmmm...we had researched names prior to signing with our agency...we found a name that fit our ethnic backgrounds and hers...Arianna has been traced back to Russian, Italian, (& Greek) origins...perfect. However...if we had known how beautiful her name was and that her birthmom had named her...well she would be Liliya Arianna...

Dimitry just didn't 'work' with our last name...altho I thought his nickname 'Dima' was cute... We decided on Alexander based on the fact that it represents his heritage....Michael is DH's name.

So, whatever #'s that goes with...

Our bio sons are names we both loved and agreed then were paired with family names.

I'd say family name is most important.

Then a name you both can agree on and love. We've always known we'd eventually adopt from Russia, the question was just when. I always loved the name Alexandrea because it's common in Russia and beautiful. What I never took in to account was that my sons would find a name they loved, we liked, and left us no other choice to chose their name. It's actually a very sweet and cute story that I will share when she comes home. (We are waiting travel dates for our first trip which we got word today should be in Jan). Anyway, so her name will be what they chose and we all four agree on, then either Alexandrea or her given name (still undecided since we are traveling blind) and then a family name, so three names.

DH and I looked through a baby name book with 45,001 names and chose the 2 names we originally picked.

All of the following were important to us when naming Connor Alexei and Adam Sergei:

1) The name reflects his/her cultural background.
Their middle names are their Russian names.

2) The name is one that I've liked for a long time.
We were fond of both names.

5) you wanted to incorporate a family name
Connor was named after my maiden name "O'Connor". Adam is a family name

6) had to be something we both agreed on
Yes, Yes, Yes

Our son had the name Maxim in the orphanage. I wasn't a huge fan of the name Max, and even less so, when I realized that Maxim is the name of a men's magazine.

So, we went with a family tradition. On my father's side of the family, the men are named after their grandfathers. So, we named him Charles Lane (after my father, Charles, and my wife's father's middle name).

Besides, he looks more like a Charlie!
