Whatever it takes to get more babies home...what a horrible statistic on infant mortality in Africa.

As long as people do not get inspired to adopt internationally the way people get inspired to to get a rabbit as a pet at Easter (ie without really knowing what they are getting themselves into)

Good Point

mschweber - I totally agree with your statement. I hope adoption doesn't become "trendy". It's a BIG DEAL. Especailly adopting transracially, there are lots of challenges facing families who adopt transracially.

Wouldn't it be nice though if it became so common that people wouldn't think twice when they encountered adoptive families and families with children of different races.

There was a very offensive article in a daily newspaper in the UK that said how "trendy" international adoption was becoming. They compared having an internationally adopted child with being a trendy accessory that all the IT girls must have. It was truly offensive.

Yes it would...it is very common where we live and sometimes I forget how lucky we are to live here...

And YIKES! Human beings should never be 'trendy.'

I only hope that people do their research before adopting internationally.
It's one thing for someone who was planning to adopt anyway decide on Ethiopia, but it is another for someone to adopt just because Angelina did.
I am just bothered by the trendy comments that you hear and read these days.

preference

I would prefer a balanced article about the "real" process and issues surrounding international adoption. Love the "rescue missions" and "PR" and the need to highlight need and critical need areas. Agree with bringing focus to crisis. Have also seen and felt the disruption and aftermath in the wake of "celebrity" missions.
