Health Insurance

I just talked to our insurance company and they said that we could put our future child on our insurance as soon as the adoption was final. For those of you who have adopted from Russia, did you have to re-adopt in the U.S. before your insurance put your child on as a member? Or was the finalization in Russia good enough?

If you did re-adopt in the U.S., how long did it take you to finalize?

We're looking into a little girl with a cleft palate and I would want this fixed as soon as possible.

Thanks!

The Russian adoption will work. You will need to get the child on before the readopyion in the US, if you wait that long to add them, there will be problems with preexisting conditions, etc. Plus you will want to have them added as quickly as possible for all the parasite and blood test that are recommended.

When I called our insurance company, they told us that coverage starts the day the adoption was finalized in Russia. They also told me that within a day or two of returning home we needed to Fax them copies of the adoption decree and Russian birth certificate so they could add him to our insurance.

As soon as we got home our daughter was covered though we did have to file some paperwork. It did take a while for the paperwork to go through so the bills for the blood tests we took right after we returned bounced back but all we had to do was resubmit the bills and they were covered. The IA doctor we visited was not covered since she not in the network but we knew that in advance.

As soon as we got home, I called the insurance company and added her. It was a simple call through my employer's internal benefits system. We have not yet readopted.

We did not have to readopt, our son was added the minute the adoption was final in Russia. We simply had to call the insurance company and they added him.

We advised our insurance company via my husband's employer about our 2 children prior to our 2nd trip. Our children were added to our insurance as "covered" per the court date of finalization in Russia.

If you encounter any resistance, push back - don't accept a later date or anything that says they are requiring something from "American courts." Sometimes (ok, usually) they are just not familiar with int'l adoption. A copy of your court decree from Russia (you'll have a translated copy) and copies of their Russian birth certificates should more than suffice, and will avoid anything being held up due to readoption or whatever other steps you may want to do.

Best of luck.

This is one I am certain of...

First congrats on looking at this child...now...

For our daughter, who needed major kidney surgery, she was added on the day we returned home...no issues. She had her kidney surgery less than 2 months after we returned and there was no problems...

For our son, I was having difficulty with the insurance company when I tried to add him as soon as we got home...I kept being told that within 30 days, blah, blah, blah. We ever paid out of pocket for his first doctors appointment...but while I was there, I saw a very newborn baby there. I called back the insurance company and asked how newborns were covered...'Oh, they are covered under the mother's policy for the first 30 days.' Guess what, so are adopted kids!!!

Lucky I made that call because on day 10 home, our son was admitted to the PICU for a fractured skull and all I had to say was put it under my social/policy number. One less thing to worry about at a very stressful time.

Best of luck to you!!!
Karen

As soon as we arrived home I went into my employer and filled out the papers and put my son on my insurance.

I faxed the adoption paperwork over to my insurance company the day we came home and it was retroactive to the adoption date (although we were still in Russia then).
Sam had surgery 10 days after we returned and everything was covered. No problems!
