Infant boys weights on referral
or gotcha days....
I am concerned with my referrals weight. He is only 14.82 lbs and is 11 months old. We have no court date yet. He was born at 36 weeks and weight was 4.62 lbs. He seem proportionate. Can you share age and weights of boy referrals?

Alex was 6 months old an approx. 15 lbs, he was about 19lbs at 8 months.
His pediatrician said that he was on the larger size for his age. If he was born on the smaller side I wouldn't be too concerned. A friend of my sisters, had a full term baby born at only 4lbs he is still small and the doctors are not concerned, they said he is just a small child. Did you consult an IA doctor? They may be able to help.

Kaitlin was only 17 pounds at 14 months, so I'd say he sounds okay, especially if he's proportionate. Kaitlin wasn't even on the growth charts at first, but she's now up into the 5-10th percentiles. There is another thread on this where everyone discussed birthweights and 1 year weights. I'll try to find it and bump it up.

Ben was probably 10 lbs at 6 months (when we got him), 14 lbs at 8 months and almost 19 lbs at 1 year. He was 4 lb 10 oz at birth and 16 inches long. He's still small (30 lbs and 36 inches at 4 1/2), but very healthy otherwise

Nicholas was 21lbs at referral, he was 22 months. He was 22lbs when we adopted him at 28 months. He has gained 1 pound per month since we have been home.

He does sound a little slim, but so was I for most of my childhood. I waas completely off the charts until I was about 5 and then got into the 10th percentile. I am healthy but undeniable short. Though, this is not always the case. People who were huge as babies can grow to be slight and the other way around.

Technically, medically speaking, children should double their birth weight by 6 mos and triple it by one year. Usually happens sooner here, but he looks okay by those standards. Our pumpkin is small....17 lbs at 18 months.

On our first visit-May of '05-Patrick weighed 16lbs at 14 months-This "low" weight concerned me as well-However, we did get to feed him a couple of times during our visits-on one visit-he had just finished lunch-it looked like some kind of barley and veggie soup-within the next 2 hours he had a bottle of sugar free apple juice(huge hit) a bannana(loved it) and a "snak-pack" of apple sauce-he chowed. He obviously has an appettie but I think the orphange's means are limited. We go to court on Aug. 30th-he"ll be like 16 1/2 months- I'll let you know what he weighs-I can't wait to get him home and fatten him up.

Jaxon weighed barely 18 pounds at 9 months (referral), but was only 19.5 pounds at 14 months when we went on our 2nd trip, so he didn't grow much in that time. He is in the 10th percentile, but the doctor is not concerned. We have him on Pediasure just as an extra measure of caution, but the doctor said it wasn't absolutely necessary.

Wow, you guys are making me feel much better!
He gained only 1/2 pound in 7 weeks. I had our coordinator go to the orphanage and get an update. We might not get back till October and that is making me crazy! I too want to get some good nutrients in his little body. He is such a happy little guy in spite of it all.

Hi Kim...it's Beth...
M's weight sounds OK...if he was a 36 weeker, you have to take into account that even though he is 11 months he should be plotted on a growth chart as a 10 month old. The IA doc had me do this for L since he was born at 34 weeks. L was 14.6 pds in mid May (10 mo.), late May he was 15 and his last update at a year (July) he was 17 pds. Unfortunately, he is not gaining much height (birthmom was tiny though), but putting on some weight so I won't complain Also, if M has giardia, he is not going to gain tons of weight. When he gets home he will do wonderfully, I just know it! Great thread! Thanks for starting it ![]() |

Kim,
Philippe only weight approx 14 1/2 lbs at 11 mths and only about 16 lbs at 13 mths. At his Dr's appointment this week he now weighs 18 lbs 11 oz, so gained over 2 lbs in about 2 months since home. He is very proportional.

Ditto! My little darling son was about 4 pounds at birth and weighed a bit over 14 pounds at 11 months. We just went to the doctor for his 15 month check-up....he's a whopping 19 pounds - a 5 pound gain in the last 4 months. The doctor was impressed.
We have worked hard to get our son to just plain eat. We give him 3 bottles a day plus 4 meals. We're so pleased - the work has definitely paid off. Good luck with your decision, CindyC |
