Where You Can Find Help for Early Intervention
Parenting is probably the most challenging but most rewarding job we will ever have. And adopted children have additional issues from developmental delays to behavioral concerns that early invention will address. It will help both parent and child, especially in those very difficult first months, when we are all adjusting to parenthood with our new addition and life outside the orphanage.
Please join me in this thread listing services that might be available in your area. I just looked up my county's program in Santa Clara County, California.
http://www.php.com/include/groups/showInfo.php?ID=25 Thanks for the suggestion. We don't have our little one home yet, but I have a brother who benefited from a similar program. I plan to get involved with this since our daughter will be a toddler instead of an infant due to all the changes in Russia. Sounds like it could be good support for me, too, being a new mom with no family around. Karen |

Anyone else in California with experience? I am in San Diego and I have found that Early Start will help my 11 mo who is delayed, but I am not finding any intervention help for my 3 yo. For Head Start (the 3+ version of Early Start), I was told she could not even be assessed unless she was autistic, had epilepsy or was mentally retarded (she does not have any of those things). Does that sound correct? I would love to get her into a program to help catch her up if I could find one. I would appreciate any info anyone has.
Thanks-

once a child turns three you should be able to get an IEP through a your local school district (maybe law is diff in CA) as far as I know as long as you make the request in writing the district is legally obligated to do the evaluation within a certain time frame |

Russiaorbust, KiraLin is correct. You can call the school district and they are obligated to arrange an evaluation for your child. If you feel there are any delays, you should do so, whether the child is autistic or not. We live in SoCal, too, and we just had our 2.5 year old evaluated. The way it's done changes at 3, but they school district should still offer the service and any therapy/special ed needed. Call your school district for more information. If they are the ones telling you it can't be done, call the state department of education at www.ca.gov. They should be able to give you more information.

Since our son has already gone through Early Childhood Intervention we already have everything set up for the arrival of our second child. Check with you school district-you can often set things up in advance.
