We found this book very useful - passed it on to relatives as well. Particularly liked that the tone wasnt "preachy" and it addressed a lot of questions that folks unfamiliar with adoption (as my parents were) may have but may be reluctant or embarassed to ask directly.

I wound up not giving it to anyone because I found that it assumed the relative reading it was hostile or critical of the adoption--I had hoped it would clarify some things for my in-laws but I decided they would be offended by it (since they were supportive, just not that educated about adoption).

I have to agree with spaypets - my mother ordered it for herself and my Dad. They are very supportive of our plans to adopt and are 110% involved and wanted to know everythign there was to know. She said she barely got past the first few pages because the book was clearly geared towards relatives that might be critical about your plans to adopt. I wish I had the guts to send it to my inlaws

CTgirl--maybe your mother should send it to your inlaws! You know, with a chatty note, saying "We found this so useful in understanding what the kids are going through!"

We got a copy of the Russian Adoption handbook. I highly recommend it for people who are considering doing a Russian adoption. It had some excellent advice and its pretty comprehensive.

We gave this to our parents as an Xmas present. As someone mentioned the family books are preachy and assume a hostile attitude. So we went with this one. It was too overwhelming for my inlaws (too much info) but my mom took it on vacation and read it cover to cover.

Its nice because if they have questions about the medical, etc. you can refer them to this book. This book helps explain what you are going through logistically. Its not touchy feely but it might be helpful to them.

I have that book and it has been really helpful. I think I read about it posted here. I'd love any more reading suggestions!

Sounds like I was like a lot of the "waiting" grandmas & grandpas. Although 100% supportive, I knew nothing about adoption. My daughter talked me into looking at the forum-I was a lurker for a few weeks and finally registered. I was a nervous wreck and felt very stupid, but jumped in and introduced myself. It was one of the greatest thing I've ever done!
Everyone was so supportive and helpful, and I feel I made so many friends. Vicki H was my "rock" while Laura & Kevin were traveling-I don't think I would have made it if not for her. They were in Russia when the plane was shot down (or exploded) and so many came on the forum to help me get in touch with the agency they were using.
I strongly urge your moms to come aboard and join in a great group that will help them also learn about adoption, the referrals, trips, etc, etc. Believe me-they'll feel as I do-this group is the GREATEST!!!!
