This is so awesome, thank you all so much. I was just thinking about this type of thread. Since I don't have a referral yet it gives me some perspective on the culture there. I love the buildings and the Gum shopping mall. All of these are great and very informative..they do say "pictures tell a thousand words" which is why when we all had to do ours of the rooms in our house for the Dossier that I was so aware of what was just laying around.
Thanks to you all please don't stop now I love them all... **Karen**

Karen, since you're going to Kemerovo, here are a few more photos for you:
Here's the Hotel Tomb:

Theatre: This is the building you see on the Kemerovo webcam. The fountain is usually running in the summer. We were there in October, and it had already been shut off for winter.

One of the parks located between streets. This is near the Hotel Tomb, and the monument at the end is to WWII soldiers. Brides leave their bouquets there after the wedding as a tribute. We saw several weddings while we were there (of course, we were there for a month).

Kimber, you were brave to stay at a hotel named "Tomb"!

A little store there at the park in the previous picture. They had wonderful fresh cheeses, summer sausages, as well as soda pop, water, and western style snack foods (paprika flavored Pringles were my favorite).

One more, a government building in the town square witha statue of Lenin. This is across the street from the post office.
Incidentally, there's a very good internet cafe next door to the post office, where you could use the computers to email, etc. for about $2-3 an hour.

LOL. You're right. But it's actually pronounced Tom, named after the river it overlooks. It kind of was a tomb. Dark, needed a little TLC. The elevator only ran from 8am to 5pm. The rest of the time you had to walk up to your room. We were on the 5th floor. I thought it was bad, until we moved to an apartment that was on the 5th floor, with no elevator. We got our exercise, though, and lost a few pounds as a result. Unfortunately, they all found their way home... The rooms in the Tomb are a little more primitive than what we're used to, but we had a fridge and a private bath, and it was always very clean. The floor ladies were nice. The doors were a little scary, though, as they were only like pantry doors with cabinet knobs on them. You used a skeleton key in a lock. But, still, we felt pretty safe there. In fact, we felt very safe in Kemerovo all of the time. We walked everywhere, even after dark. Everyone was out walking and sitting in the parks.

Duh, I guess I should post a photo of the post office, since I referred to it... For some reason, I thought I already had.

I have a few of the St. Petersburg courthouse/courtroom. I will look for and scan others later. This is such a great thread and bring back so many memories!
I look forward to going back one day!

the photo of the restaurant "Golden Chicken" reminded me of a place we ate in Khabarovsk, called "The Golden Bird".
it was a fast-food chicken place - laid out like a typical fast food place here. it was very clean and well staffed. unfortunately everyone in our group got the runs after eating there.
