Good tape/CD to learn Russian?
Anyone have a good recommendation on a tape/CD to learn Russian phrases for adoptive parents? Thanks so much!

I've been using the Pimsleuar instant conversation, but it doesn't do anything for adoptive parents. I asked my translator a few things, like "hi" and "i love you" while we were there.

If you do a search into old threads, there's one where folks list words and phrases for parents to use with their children; things like, "dont' be scared", "are you hungry", etc. It's a good thread.

"Adopting from Russia" is a good cd...they also sell a cd for the children to listen to that teaches them English. It is done by Teresa Kelleher. I'm sure if you do a search for her name and the name of the cd you will find the website. I can't seem to find it.

Two good FREE sites for learning words and phrases appropriate for adoptive parents:
http://www.math.byu.edu/People/links.../adoption.html (Scroll down to the language section. There's a written sheet with Cyrillic and phonetic English and sound files you can download and put on CD if you wish.) http://www.achildsdesire.org/russianwords.htm (Click on each phrase to hear it pronounced.) I've been using Pimsleur and have enjoyed it. Even though it's not terribly relevant to the children it will be useful when we travel, especially if we want to order beer. (Those of you who've done Pimsleur Russian I will understand this. ) For families adopting babies, I would think that the adoption-oriented phrases would be enough to get by,but since we're adopting older children I really would like to know a bit more of the language so I'll probably continue with the next Pimsleur level, too.

I cannot say enough good things about "Adopting from Russia" by Teresa Kelleher. Our travel dates are approaching soon and we had not done any language prep at all. I got the cd and computer game this past week. I have listened to it maybe 5 or 6 times through just driving in the car and I am telling you that I am amazed at the amount of very useful phrases I learned. It is awesome, worth every penny.
Good luck! Kat

We would also recommend Adopting from Russia by Kelleher. This is a great program because I think it is very relevent and geared to the words and phrases your adopted child will want to hear from you to communicate. It helped us with adoption no. 1, 2 years ago from Russia.
There are plenty of other language programs, but, I found many of them are really geared towards "tourist language skills" or elementary business communications, not really the kinds of things you will be talking with your little one about (but might help some if you want to communicate in Russian a bit with the judge, MOE, etc.) Jackie and Joe |

Due to the blatant disregard of the rule regarding retail websites/fee based services advertising, I am closing this thread for 24 hours.
