circumcision gone bad???
O.K. I have a question for all of you that had your son't circumcized. Will underwent his circumcision (well just say "C" from now on) and now I don't know if it's infected of what?
Will has developed redness underneath and around his P. I've been very careful to wash the underneath and around with just a wet (water) gauze and put a new dressing with bacetracin on it over the stiches. The doctor says that it's probably one of the stiches comming loose and it will heal itself but I can't help but feel so guilty for causing Will any pain. He is his jovial self all the other time with crawling onto the couch, running around, ect. Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks, Lisa

We had Alex's done in Nov. He was just a little over a year old. I felt terrible afterwards. For 2 days he just cried and trembled whenever I had to clean the area. His did get red and puffy looking. This is what our dr. told us. The area would be red until the new skin had healed and then even longer. It's been around 3 months since his and the skin still isn't "normal" color. He also stayed puffy just from the "C" for about 2 weeks. He never acted like it bothered him until I had to put the medicine on it. Hope this helps a little. I'm curious, Do you have to keep it bandaged? We didn't have to, just kept bacetracin on it.

As a nurse this is common, you need to keep it as clean as possible and put the Bacitracin ointment on routinely. They may experience some swelling and pain upon urination for the first few times. Look for any other swelling or discharge. This is not normal. They will usually heal within 7-10 days. LISA

I was told to put a clean guaze (not taped or anything just placed on top of the "P") with bacetracin over it.? It sounds to me that you just had bacetracin with just a diaper on. Maybe the guaze is rubbing against him and creating the redness?
Please let me know.... Lisa

gauze
Hi:
I wasn't told to put the gauze on it. I was told to put the bacitracin on the penis and then rub a lot vaseline over the diaper area that would be touching the penis. It was definitely red and puffy for a few days before it got better. Katie |

Just an opposing opinion here. If you have any questions, definitely ask your doctor. Our son did have a circumcision gone bad and now he has a condition called "buried penis" where the penis has receded into the fatty tissue surrounding it so that it doesn't stick out at all. If you push on the tissue around it, it sticks out so you know it's there, but otherwise you can't even see it! It will probably require surgery later in life. If something doesn't look right, ask someone who knows for sure. That said, I did ask my doctor and he said "nah, it's fine" and obviously it wasn't.

I suggest getting a squeeze tube of Vaseline. You just squirt a bunch of it on at diaper changes. No rubbing. Our youngest son's skin wanted to adhere for a long time and we did the Vaseline for several months. It finally was ok. Our dr. said not to clean or wipe the area. I wonder if that is making it red? Just a thought.
My girlfriend's son had a 'buried' penis (don't think that's the correct word, but...). He did not require surgery, though he was in elementary school before everything "worked out" so to speak.

We just put a lot of Neosporin (like Bacitracin) on his penis so it wouldn't stick to the diaper. Otherwise the doctor said to leave it alone.

Thanks everyone. I feel a lot better. I am still going to call the Dr. in the AM and let her know about the redness and I have stopped being so concerned about "cleaning" around his "P" I figured the Bacetracin (antiboitic cream) is taking care of the "cleaning" part.
I now can sleep tonight. Thanks again everyone!!!! God do I love this board!!!! Lisa

Lisa,
Alex's was very red and sore looking , we were told to put bacitracin , but no gauze. I also called the doctor and they assured me that it would look extremely red at certain spots for a while. I too felt horrible for days, I am happy with the decision though, I just hated to see him in pain. Vicki

We were also told no gauze only vaseline on the diaper and not to get agressive cleaning the penis, just gentle wiping with warm water. Alek had his done ro remove scar tissue and a cyst on 1/25 and by the 8th day it was completely normal looking, the first 3 days it was very red and puffy, the first 2 days he hated diaper changes, but then after that no issues at all.
Definitely call the surgeon and tell them what you are seeing and your concerns. Best wishes,

First of all, thank you, Lisa for you help with the electronic equipment... I carried those instrucions all the way across the globe and back!
As for your qusetion: When Thomas had his done, the best advise I got was from my grandma who told me to melt some vaseline (could add some bactracin in, if it isn't getting too hot) and put gauze in it and let it cool. As you make the diaper changes pull a gauze off and make a tent around the part in question here. That way it keeps the area from sticking to the diaper and gets the medicine on the place it's needed. I found I couldn't get the bactracin to stay on the affected area of a squirming little boy! I would certainly ask the doctor if the redness looks infected. It may be slightly, it may not be. I think the Dr. put Thomas on some prophylactic antibiotics at the time because we had questionable redness and he didnt' want to take any chances. I agree, it is so hard to see them so upset those first few days... herat-breaking. Thankfully both you and he will forget it! |

We didn't have to wrap in gauze
Our Dr. only told us to put a generous amout of the bacetracin ointment on the incision. It does sound like the gauze may be causing some of the irritation. We never had any problem with the diaper sticking... Hope Will is doing better.

Update
I found out the problem!!!! He was wearing diapers that were too small. (can you believe that one!) I got a bigger size and already he is starting to look normal again. Looks like the guaze was irratating the surrounding areas.
I can now breath a sigh of relief! Now I know what is small for him now! He's a big kid! This is my first child so I have to play the HHHUUUMMM game a lot with myself. LOLOL Thanks everyone for your help. I called the Dr. today and he is going to see her tomorrow just in case I'm stupid in the instructions. Hey, I guess that's why we pay insurance for huh?? Again...thanks for the support and it is appreciated!!!! Lisa
