Hemangioma - Anyone have a child with one?
This little guy we are evaluating has a smallish hemangioma on the lower eyelid. I know it can be surgically removed HOWEVER there can be issues arising from eye-brain development if the tumor is putting pressure on the eyeball.
Has anyone had any experience with a hemangioma? (I know they are VERY common in the US - 1 out of every 1,000 births) Also, for the nurses out there, how can you tell if it is truly a hemangioma OR a port wine stain?

Our little girl had one on her bottom. When we traveled on our first trip, we were told by the doctors that it had been treated with medicine. You could barely see it. Unfortunatly, this type of treatment won't help you because of the location on his eye. Good luck.

Not a nurse, but have seen hemangiomas before. They are usually raised, and red - think of a clowns nose.
Most can be surgically removed, some disappear on their own. I think a port wine stain will be flatter and darker.

Hemangioma
Hi:
Our son has a large Hemangioma on the back of his theigh. It is about the size of small orange. We were not made aware of it until when I went to change my first diaper in the orphanage. Our doctor has told us it will all but disappear by the time he is five. It has been a 15 months since we came home and is it gradually fading. Port wine stains are normally flat. Hemangioma's are raised and almost look like small blood filled blisters. I don't know about the eye connection but did see a specal on Hemangioma's on the Discovery station. I bet if you go on their website you can get more information. There is a doctor in NY that specializes in them. I am sure you can email him for more information. Katie |
