airline adoption rate

I have a friend traveling soon, got her plane tickets today and was told by our local travel agent (that does most all the arrangements for our agency) that the adoption rate only applies to the tickets for her second trip! That doesn't make sense. Its not like we're going over there on vacation for the first trip!??

Has anyone gotten adoption rates for both trips?

Thanks ( l love that smiley face, what a happy face! )

I was told that at least one of the airlines (don't remember which one) will only give the adoption rate for the trip when you bring your child home.

Also, lots of people on this forum have said that the only advantage to the adoption rate is being able to change your dates without paying additional fees. The adoption fares are discounted off of full-fare fully changeable tickets. You would probably be better off to get a rock-bottom price from a travel agent and if your dates change, you can just pay the fee to change your tickets.

definitely talk to a travel agent. They got us nearly $1000 off each ticket from what we could find online - and that included the highest priced tickets - the adoption fares. Good luck

We used adoption fares (NW/KLM) for all of our trips. Yes, there are cheaper fares out there, but in our case we had very short notice (1 week) to plan for each trip and were travelling peak season (last June, middle of the white nights and St. Pete's 300th anniversary) so there were few truly cheap fares to be had. We paid ~$1000 rt, which isnt bad for short notice travel in the summer. And we did end up changing our returns each time, so for us it was worth it. If you hae the luxury of a little more advance notice for your trip you can probably shop around and save.

I have travelled recently, and Priceline had a deal I am not sure if it is still running, but is worth pursuing of roundtrip for $84.00 from San Francisco, California to Moscow.

Vicki,

Some people like to come to the forums and pretend to be something (or someone) they aren’t....and that is the case here. It's an attention thing...and nothing more

Sorry guys, there is not $84.00 ticket to Moscow from the US...

Thanks Brandy. One can always hope, but it did sound too good to be true. We paid more than that for our domestic flights in Russia.

Well, if she would made the price more realistic and believable, say $550 rounndtrip or something, maybe she could have gotten away with it! LOL!

As far as travel goes, if you're going to Russia, I would recommend contacting the many travel agencies which specialize in adoption travel/travel to Russia - they usually have the inside track to discounts and such.

Thanks, Brandy. I was kind of hoping it was a typo, and that the fare was really $840, which would still be excellent. Too bad. I don't understand people who get their jollies off of stuff like this.

We did honestly pay 775.00 per ticket when we went on our second trip to Russia. This was on Lufthanza and we had a 3 hour layover both trips. There are some decent prices out there, it just depends if you are willing to have a layover in another country or if you want to fly directly to Moscow.
On our first trip we paid almost 1,000.00 per ticket for AirFrance and we had a 7 hour layover in Paris. I thought this was a horrible price but we didn't have a lot of time to shop around.

That's great, Vicki. In looking for airfares for August, I'm coming up with $1500 as the cheapest. Of course I haven't checked into adoption fares yet, and I'm hoping those will be significantly less.

Honestly Kim I think the airfares tend to be higher during the summer months. We paid more on the first trip because we went in September and it was still nice in Russia. Our coordinator told us people would still vacation there in September.
Our second trip was in November , it was cold and snowing almost everyday. The airport wasn't that crowded so I would guess that's how we ended up with the lower rate for our second trip.
Check around if you have the time, we actuall checked with AAA because we are members and actually got a better rate through the travel agency that our adoption agency recommended. Hope this helps.
