Medical Concern

Has anyone accepted a referral whose birth mother tested positive for syphilis?

Unfortunately we don't know when she tested positive or if our baby tested positive for it. We just know that he was treated for it with pennicilan at birth.

We are receiving differing opinions as to if this will affect the health of our baby (i.e. mental retardation).

I appreciate your resonses in advance!

Please feel free to pm me.

Thanks so much
Lynn

Our referral stated that the birth mother did test positive for syphilis. They tested the baby at birth and her results were negative.

Try to get the test results not just that they administered pennicilan.

I read that it's not necessarily a big deal if the child was treated properly at birth.

I think there is a test that can be done to see if the syphillis is still present. Is the child in a big city where there is an American or European clinic? If so, you may be able to request that the child be tested.

Best wishes,

Xanny

I also heard that this is not a significant issue. You may want to contact Texas Children's Hospital in Houston Texas. They do a phenomenal job of preparing you for your first visit and are available 24/7 while your are in russia.

I cannot say enough great things about them.
