New here....

Hello everyone!! I wanted to introduce myself and let you know why I am here! My name is Kim and my husband and I are thinking of adoption. I am in the process of gathering information and thought the best way to find out is to talk to those that have already been through this process. We have been ttc for almost 2 years and are growing impatient!! We are very eager to have children and we would love to adopt. As of now we are leaning towards Russia, although we are not opposed to any country as long as we can get a child!! We are totally overwhelmed by the information and don't even know where to start! I would love to hear from anyone and everyone that has been in our shoes and can offer any words of advice and encouragement!! Another problem we are encountering is that my husband is an active duty Marine and we have found out that it is harder for a military family to be approved for adoption!! So if anyone knows anything about that I would love to be informed of it!! Thank you all so much in advance!! I am looking forward to getting to know you all!! God Bless!
Kim

Hi Kim

Well you are heading in the right direction. The first step in international adoption is picking your country/agency.
I have never heard of military personnel having a hard time adopting.
You should call some agencies and ask them. With international adoption a lot depends on the requirements of the country. Russia seems to have the easiest requirements.
Good luck

Welcome Kim! I am new here as well, but am finding it a great group of wonderful people who are so eager to help.

We are waiting on our travel dates for Russia and we had a long journey to get to this point. Our expected travel time is October and we are very excited.

I wish you the best of luck with your decision to adopt. If you have any other questions....feel free to post them.

Kim,

I know several AD Marine families that have adopted....most agencies located around the base are familiar with the issues involved in being an AD Marine.

I think the biggest issue would be planning the homestudy/classes required while being on an 18 month deployment schedule, like my husband was when he was active duty.

Here is a list of adoption professionals experienced in military adoption.

Good luck!

Kim,

As you wade through all the adoption information, you will likely have some questions about costs and available tax credits and grants. You may or may not be aware but active military personnel can receive a $2,000 federal grant for non-recurring adoption expenses. This is in addition to the $2,000 federal grant that may be available from your State and the $10,000 federal adoption tax credit. This link may also be helpful as it discusses adoption situations that are unique to military personnel.

Good Luck!!
