Thumbs up RECEIVED REFERRAL!!

****UPDATED:

We accepted our little guy... he's a big guy now though! LOL..
here is a link!
http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/m/maverick

HI guys! We received a referral on Monday, I sent the info to the doctor the other day.. He doesn't like the size of the lil' guys head! I honestly say it's fine! But here goes his sizes.......

Birth

8 Pounds
18 inches length
13 Inches Head Circumference
13.38 inches Chest Circumference

***********************
At 11 Months Old

18 Pounds
27.5 inches Length
17 inches Head Circumference
17.75 inches Chest circumference

I honestly think his size is pretty good... As we all know, they lack all kinds of vitamins and such.. So they are going to be smaller regardless! But I looked up last night, average for a 1 year old for their head circumference is 18 inches... for the average body lenth being 32-35 inches... Now of course their head will be bigger thanmy lil guy because they are LONGER!!! My boy is shorter!

Did anyone encounter this by chance?? I'm starting to kind of freak, because this would be the ONLY thing that would be stopping me from adopting this boy! Because as we all know it, if their heads are TOO small, that means, they are mental issues later on.. I'm hoping this boy is healthy! To me in his video, he looks realllly good! I guess I'm just looking for some optimistic thoughts here! I'm not liking the doctor that I choose so far.. he's out of Chicago.. Let me know what you guys all think!

Thanks!
~Kelly

WoW! You must be so excited to have a referral....he sounds like a sweetie!

If you want to send your video and pics off for a second opinion, you might want to try Jane Aronson... she is a specialist in international adoption referrals. Her web site is orphandoctor.com

Good luck and keep us posted!

in regards to head circumference

Sorry to say this, but I think your MD is right. They say when you're looking at your referral, it is common for kids from Russia to be smaller then normal size. HOWEVER, they do say that the head should be the best ratio to normal of all the areas. So, if the length is in the 50%, and the chest is in the 40% the head should be the best, like in the 55% (if the head ratio is lower, then there could be a CNS problem or congenital problem the baby was born with). Since your measurements are in cm and I don't have a pediatric growth chart in front of me, it is difficult to tell. There is a good doctor in Rhode Island at the Hasbro Children's Hospital who speaks/reads russian and is familiar with health concerns. His name is Dr. Boris Skurkovich. If you call his office he will review your referral, for a small fee.

We adopted from Russia before, succesfully. that's how I know. Good luck with your referral.

Julie

If it were me I would get a 2nd opinion. We used Dr Dana Johnson in Minnesota for our review. Our daughter's medical didn't look so good and even some things on the video made us think twice. Dr Johnson assured us she was right on target and she was somewhat delayed by American standards but for being in an orphanage for her first year she was doing very good. Now at age 2.5 she is very bright and a joy to have as a daughter. Her head size has always been at 40-50% and her height/weight at 80-90%. Our ped doesn't seem to be concerned about her head size so neither am I.

CONGRATULATIONS

I dont know much about the head circumference but it doesnt seem that much smaller than average.
I would probably get another opinion.
Accept the referral only if you are very comfortable with him. A lot of people turn down their first referral and get another one pretty quickly.

I typed in his measurements on an on line growth chart. (www.healthatoz.com) Here is what I got:

Birth:

8 pounds is in the 57% percentile
18 inches is in the 5%
13 inches (head) is in the 9%

11 months:

18 pounds is below the 3%
27.5 inches is in the 3%
17 inches (head) is below the 3% (However, it did say that the acceptable range would be anywhere between 17.3 and 19.2 inches.

There is a very good possibility that these measurements are not correct. The way they measure head circumference in Russia is a little different from the way we do it here. Can you ask for them to measure him again?

Kelly - I adopted my daughter from Russia and when I had her medical info reviewed, it was by the U of Minnesota. I saw where another person posted the Dr's name...Dana Johnson. I'm pretty sure that that is the same doctor who I spoke with too. The U of Minn has a GREAT repuation for evaluating international babies, and I would definitely trust them more than I would a regular pediatrician who isn't familiar with the delays and smaller than (American) average sized kids.

Good luck, I pray that this works out for you. One bit of advice I will share is to follow your heart as well as your head. If you see the video and see the child interacting and making facial expressions, sounds, movements, etc. which are typical to any other children you know of that age or slightly younger, then I'd feel good about going with that referral.

What an absolute Cutie-Patootie!!! I love the picture of Mav with Dad -- he really looks like a proud Pop!!!

I am glad that you found the orphandoctor site that I recommended useful. We attended a seminar by Dr. Aronson and thought she seemed wonderful.

Good luck with your 2nd trip!!! Hope all goes smoothly... please keep us updated!
