adoption info
I just found out and printed some usefull information from the Russian Ministry of Education's web site. The Russian Ministry of Education stopped excepting adoption paperwork from any american adoption AGENCIES for 2 years (letter #8 from 09 April 2002). Until 09 April 2004 the adoption paperwork from an agencies will not be excepted.

Something is fishy...
Because that message says that it is effective for 2 years...until 2004. That means no US adoption agencies for the past 1 year...yet I know of at least 5 families that started and completed their adoptions during that year.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Nobody seems to have heard a thing about it... |

I just found out from my adoption agency that the above statement is FALSE. You can still adopt through Russia using an agency. What the report is saying is that Russia is no longer accepting paperwork for ACCREDITATION until 2004...meaning no new agencies can be accredited until then.Adoptions will still continue as normal... |

adoption through agency
Sorry, it is not what you think it is or your agency. This information is located on official web site of Russian Ministry of Education. Do you think I will trust your agency over an official web site? Wrong! Contact the Russian officials, not your agency!
Your agency now will have to use a Russian agent only to do an adoption process in Russia. So, agency will charge you their own fees (FOR DOING NOTHING!) and fees of that agent! If you want, please, do so. It is a free country. However, I don't want to pay an agency for doing nothing! |

Look at the dates...this has been in effect since April of 2002...this is nothing new...and what I said, and what my agency said (the director is a Russian lawyer...I'm sure she knows how to read Russian law...) is what I believe.
If there were any "problems" then why have there been 7 families (that we know of) in the past year adopt from Russia??? |

adoption through agency

Did I really stated in my message that such a law is something new and it is impossiable to adopt a child in Russia? I am very happy, if you trust your agency that much. However, I do belive an official government's web site over your agency. I understand that you don't know how to read Russian law. Otherwise, you would be able to find out for yourself (like I did)and will not be agressive towards me. Can I ask how much your agency charged for an adoption? A lot, ha! Do you know how much an adoption cost in Russia? I do. I am not trying to upset you. I am trying to make a point. |

Well WHAT is your point??? You said that adoption paperwork from "any American adoption agencies will not be accepted for 2 years". Then you said "Well, independant adoption is still an option...". To me, it seems as though you were saying that you cannot adopt through Russia for another 1 year, if you are using an agency. That is not true. Then somewhere you changed your topic, and have decided that it's about how much things cost, which is totally irrelevant. It is obvious to me that you are anti-agencies, or you wouldn't be posting this sort of thing. Michelle - we live on Kodiak, but lived in Eagle River for 2 years back in 1993-95. ![]() Andy |

Accreditation
I too asked my agency what this all means. I was told that it meant no new agencies in Russia for 2 years. There have been no changes in Russian law besides this. There are hundreds of families in the US and all over the world still adopting from Russia as we speak. If no adoptions were allowed from Russia then this would not be happening!
