Question re. information

Hey All,

I've been really afraid for some reason to post this but I was told by the courthouse when I called that birthmothers in my county are not allowed access to non-identifying information

And also that all records (including legal transcripts) regarding the adoption of my children have been destroyed by the courts. That this was done to all legal documents re. Probate before 1980.

Do those two things sound legitimate?

Someone had suggested researching this through the State of Michigan.

Stupid question probably, but does anyone know what department at the State level handles legal transcripts?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Hi Janey,

I don't know the answer re birth parents but I do know the answer to destroying legal documents.

Yes, they probably have destroyed the physical document but they would have had to put them on micro-fische (sp?) before the physical destruction. That is where my legal court documents were and I was allowed to read them and print copies of them.

Cheers!

Janey, I would also check with the state. My county did not give any information, but when I searched the state, it led me to more info. Even if the records are old, they should be kept on microfilm. I don't believe they can just "destroy records". Maybe you just spoke to someone who didn't know what they are talking about. Did you ask if they still have that ugly clock on the wall after all these years?

Janey, as a lawyer, I am often shocked at transcripts that get destroyed. Sometimes they are really destroyed, and sometimes clerks just say that because they are lazy! I find I get the best results when I go in person to get information (I don't know if you live near that courthouse). Then you can also ask for a supervisor if you get a rude clerk, etc. GOOD LUCK!

Did you contact Juvenile court?

My dh is starting his search and it's amazing the run around on some things he is getting. Along with the "I am NOT telling you this..." he's been told he can't have them even though the law has very specifically said he can.

We'll be nagging...

Sorry, no answers for ya, just sharing your frustration!!

Heart

Thank you everyone for your support!!!

You guys are the best!!!

I was at the doctors with my youngest most of hte afternoon yesterday and ended up at the hospital with my husband till 2:00 a.m. last night and so I am fuzzy this morning. If it's okay with you guys I'll just address everybody in one big paragraph. (Please forgive me for that. Normally my manners are better and I answer everyone individually).

I was told by the clerk that microfiche records aren't even kept around anymore. (I thought that was strange).

But what I will do is go there in person and also call the State and see what they can find out - if anything.

Love you guys!
