Concerned about high $$$ of adopting (we're already legal guardians & have birthmom's ok

Recently, the birth Mom, our daughter and I went to a lawyer and were told that it would cost $2,000 plus costs !!! to adopt Lily. We'll have to have the state come in AGAIN to check our home and go through all of the paperwork, etc. again. I just can't believe it's fair to make us pay for something that everyone wants and everyone knows is the right thing. The $3,000 or so could be better spent on Lily's education and extra curriculum activities. If you know of a better way to handle this, pls reply or call (562) 427-2838. Thanks - and call me anxious !! P.S. I've called several attorneys and each has told me essentially the same thing. PLEASE HELP ! Thanks much, Shelley

In most states, when a child has been a court-dependent, the home study and legal expenses to place the child with an adoptive family are covered by the county or state. I suggest you contact your local department of health and social services and ask how they can help you with the adoption process. Please keep in mind that you are helping the county or state by providing a permanent home for Lily, and you deserve to be treated well. The good news is, once Lily is adopted, that is the end of the legal activities and possible expenses. You will be her Mommy, both in practice and by law. Best wishes as you complete your adoption plan! Regards, Bruce
