question about myspace

Are you allowed to open an account on myspace or yahoo 360 just for your child. Either putting it in your name or their name...but pretty much using it too keep birthfamily updated with pictures and a journal type entries of what the child has been up to?

I've been looking into creating my own family website or one per child....but yahoo360 and my space would give me everything I'm looking fo and it's free.

I'm new to both of them so I'm not sure if it's permited. can it be dangerous for the child? If only those you invite can view it than it should be pretty safe right?

Please give me your thoughts.

Myspace has a minimum age requirement of 16 years old. With that said, there certainly are younger people on there.

I think you would be safe if YOU had a myspace profile and put updates on it for friends and family. Just follow the normal online rules such as not using your address, full name, etc.

acutally on myspace you only have to be 14 but if you that you are only 14 you are restricted as to what you can access and post, which is why most people lie and there is no verification process...

I know a lot of writer friends who have pages on myspace for promotion etc but I wouldn't reccomend it for anything related to your child... there is a reason it's called stalker.net it's one of the top sites visited by pedophiles.

Why not look into free blogging websites; blogger, or, my favorite, wordpress (they offer free and paid). MySpace has too many weirdos on it who are purposely looking for ... whatever. If you're "just another blog" in the web, you're less likely to be targeted. Wordpress's blogs also offer the option to make certain posts password locked so that you can email whomever the post is intended for the pswd so that they can get in but any Joe Schmoe could not. Unless your password was password.

Im with Jenna on this one.. for update purposes.. probably a blog would be better.

If you lock down your myspace, yes it can be safe.. but you really have more options with the blog.

Of course you can just make your blogposts on myspace viewable to friends only.. but it seems like th e harder route.

I keep a website updated for dd's bmom - but our friends and family like to look at it, too. I'll pm it to you because I'm not sure if I can say the name.

Myspace

Not sure about the official "rules" but my 12 year old daughter (w/out our permission) was able to set up an email address through Yahoo then use that to set up a profile on myspace. She listed herself as 99 yrs old which a lot of the younger kids are doing apparantly. Myspace didn't question it. Ahhh! It's a great tool, just wish she went about the whole thing another way.

My Space is very dangerous

I used to work in the County DAs office where I live and you would belive the amount of internet preditors on my space. It needs to be shut down. I recently discovered that my 15 year old stepdaughter had met several boys on there and actually met them. I would recommed not using my Space at all. Its just one big accident waiting to happen.
