Are original birth certificates destroyed?
I was always under the assumption that original birth certificates were not destroyed when new certificates were issued upon adoption; however, I read somewhere that they are. Are original birth certificates kept on file especially if born after 1980? Do adoption birth certificates look like original birth certificates? How would one know the difference? Does Oklahoma keep original birth certificates?

Elsa,
I am an adoptee and petitioned the court of Oklahoma county for my OBC in 1985. My petitioned was granted and I have my OBC along with my ammended one... the one the adoptive parents have with their name on it. The difference in the two I have is that my OBC has my birth mothers name listed... which was an alias name and I am listed as Baby Girl with my birth mothers alias last name. But it has the city and state she was living at the time. On the ammended certificate it has my adoptive parents name and their address at the time of my adoption and also has my adoptive name listed. Sad to say the judge that granted my petition is now retired but I would be happy to help you any way I can. I have some contacts of some that may be of help as well here in Oklahoma. |
