questions how to go about a related adoption
If anyone can tell me how to go about a related adoption. My cousin is putting her baby up for adoption and asked if I would take it. I have no problems after years of infertility problems this is my only hope.

The very best thing for you to do is contact a local adoption agency. You can get information without committing yourself to going through that agency. (Many states require that you go through an agency, even for a relative adoption.) If you are in Florida, I can give you additional information.

Start with an attorney or agency
Hi Ladies!
My husband and I adopted our son 15 months ago. This was a relative adoption. Start by obtaining an adoption lawyer or agency. You will probably need to go through all the steps as a traditional adoption. There will be a homestudy, counselling session, social worker visits, as well as medical exams and we had fire marshall and sw home inspections. Your agency or lawyer will guide you through the whole process. This will take about 6 weeks to complete everything barring any complications or problems. Then it is just a waiting game till the child arrives. One of the few things different from a traditional adoption is, you have already been selected by a birthmom and you don't have the waiting to be selected or advertising situation. Best wishes! |

In Florida, if you are related to the child within the third degree, no home study is necessary!! (Aunts/uncles, grandparents, sisters/brothers of the child are within the third degree.) I know that the requirements differ from state to state, so please talk to an adoption agency or attorney.
