We are looking to foster adopt my oldest brothers daughter. She is six months old and has only lived in foster care. The mother has mental issues and does not have custody of her other child and only supervised visitation with Danielle. My brother is handicapped and although willing is probably unable to care for her.
We recently recieved a request for family to take her and of course we would love to bring her into our home, bearing in mind that little more than a year ago we gave birth to our 2nd daughter 11 weeks premature our oldest is 10. It has been a long year. We were surprised to hear of my brothers daughters birth in Oct. We offered what support we could and even offered to take her but that only upset people so we backed off and heard nothing for six months. Now come to find out that those people who could take her won't and those that want her can't have her. I'm scared out of my wits. I don't know what there going to expect from us, we are barely getting back on our feet from the 3 months we spent in hospital. This is also taking place across state lines as Danielle is in South Dakota and we are in Wyoming. The worker told my mother that they wanted to do a home inspection. I read something about an interstate compac (not sure what that is about). There is also supposed to be a hearing soon to sever the mothers rights but i'm not sure about that. All I know is that we are willing to take her indefinatly, to adopt her to call her our own and give her the same love that I give my children and my sisters children. I know that I don't want her to grow up in the system in different foster care for who knows how long. SHe needs to bond and be loved. Looking for answers, Auntie |

Hello, I am also trying to get my nieces and I am currently in the process. This is what we have gone through so far.
ICPC is the agency the worker is talking about. "This is also taking place across state lines as Danielle is in South Dakota and we are in Wyoming. The worker told my mother that they wanted to do a home inspection. I read something about an interstate compac (not sure what that is about). There is also supposed to be a hearing soon to sever the mothers rights but i'm not sure about that. " And they will come out and do a home study to make sure your home is "suitable" for the child. (That was a pain.) Fingerprinting and a whole lot of waiting. lol My nieces have been in foster care since December 15, 2003 and it is now May of 2004. And we are still waiting to get them from TX (I am in GA). Our home study is finished and on the way to the case worker in TX, I don't think she has it yet though. What happens after this? I don't know but I will try to keep you posted if you wish. Becci |

good luck
Good luck. I too am going through ICPC from Oregon to Montana. It has been almost 2 weeks since I first talked to Oregon. I have talked to Montana and have receive the paperwork. fingerprinting, getting my other 3 kids shots records recorded, ect.. I have yet to hear anything back.
From my brief experience I have noticed and read this all takes some time. Hang in there.!! |

Adopted nephew
The adoption of my son was finalized in March. At first there was a lot of red tape and frustration. Tons of unreturned phone calls and "I don't know", "You have to do this" or "Let me find out and call you back". Be presistent!!! But nice. In the end, I hired a private attorney and called him frequently until my son was officially allowed to be in our custody. (luckily we brought him home from the hospital and "babysat" him till all the paperwork was processed through the courts. He did not have to go to a foster home.)
Maybe you could get the caseworkers' e-mail address and do some of your communicating that way. It also gives you a good record of everything that is going on and is cheaper than calling all the time!! Best wishes! ![]() |
