Dear Lynard,
Congrats on your new daughter! When is the baby due?
Our adoption is final, June 28th, and we did go with an attorney. I think I did more work on the case than he, or his staff, did. If I had it to do over again, I think I would have just opted to do it myself. The only thing is , now that it's over and we are having trouble with the b-mom (due to her mainlining meth), I am glad to know that we did it with the aid of an attorney.
In Maryland, we did not have to do a home study since we were related and the wait was only 90 days. Maryland has since changed the waiting period and it's 30 days now. That happened during our adoption process and I infomed the lawyer of the change in the law! Teagan was born on Feb 19th so our total wait was 4 1/2 months. We had complete say over everything from the minute she was born. I talked to the social worker at the hospital before she was born so that we knew what to expect. We were in the operating room during delilvery and she went straight to the NICU due to low blood sugar, we made all medical decisions from the moment she was born since we had all the papers in order . Her b-mom opted to not hold or see her at all. Her b-dad (my son) was in AZ and saw her since she was about 4 months old (he moved here). He refers to himself as her big brother and has adjusted really well to everything. Teagan sees her b-siblings all the time .
If you have any questions or need to talk to someone who's been there, feel free to email me any time.
