Heart

I got it for my parents and they're reading it now. They adopted a teenage boy and girl from Ukraine and have been home about a month now. I've heard such great things about it.

I read some review's on another sight. People either love it or completely find it revolting. Even saying it risks children's lives. What is this all about? It sounded like quite an insightful book to me.

If they think it risks children's lives then they apparently can't read. Nancy Thomas is a wonderful person and her parenting techniques are very nurturing, loving, and provide the structured environment traumatized children need for healing. She's written another book with the help of her daughters, one of whom was an attachment disrdered adopted child. In this book, entitled Dandelion on my Pillow, Butcher Knife Beneath, you get the mom's viewpoint and the child's viewpoint of what it was like to grow up using these parenting methods. It's a good book but the children in it are very disturbed and so I don't usually recommend it to newer parents. However, I can't stand the Nancy Thomas bashers who have no HONEST basis to back up their idiotic opinions of good theraputic parenting.

Thank you greatly. I will be getting these. Looks like we might be in it for the long run w/our FD. If faced w/the decision of adoption, we want to be as prepared as possible to help her and help her help herself

Our group in training was told by DCYF that they would pull the license of anyone who used her "techniques" with a foster child. I have read her first book and as someone with a master's degree in couseling psychology I found many of her techniques highly questionable and would not use them for foster children in my care. However, it does give you insight on the behavior of a child with RAD. There are other good books out there and your state library's family resource connection can give you a list if you contact them.

Really? What techniques did you find questionable?

I know many therapists and psycologists who have read and recommend her books.
