Martian Child
I loved this movie. I cried the whole time so I went to see it by myself so DH wouldn't make fun of me! I brought kleenex with me because I'm lame like that. I guess as far as scripts/plots go it wasn't the best but if you are living the fost/adopt life then you will love the movie. It got horrible reviews (I'm guessing because it was a movie of substance). |

Yeah, I saw the movie Friday night and the review last night. It was like... Did we watch the same movie? I could really relate to a lot of it. Especially the big finale. I had almost the same converstion with ds just last week. Unfortunately in real life you don't have the conversation once and then life is wonderful. You have the conversation at least every six months (he has been with us for 3 years, adopted for two) and he still doesn't quite believe it.

I just saw this movie yesterday and my husband and I both loved it. We are a waiting family for foster-adoption and we thought it was great. I never listen to the critics ratings anyway!! It was 2 thumbs up in my opinion!

I'm so glad to hear this movie wasn't butchered! I was so worried that it wouldn't be adoption accurate...now I can go see it!!!

I also love this movie! When I first got it on DVD I watched it everyday...My kids walked around saying "Tran-fo-bo-me-de-o" for days! I did too..lol
I think I like it so much because I relate to Dennis. I often think I am from another planet...I always felt (feel) like a "martian child" I might watch it again tonight ..lol

Here is the sumamry I found on the internet:
What's the nature of being a parent and of being a child? David is a widower grieving for two years. He writes science fiction and was considered weird as a boy. He meets Dennis, a foster child who claims to be on a mission from Mars, stays in a large box all day, fears sunlight, and wears a belt of flashlight batteries so he won't float away. David takes the six-year-old home on a trial. His sister and his wife's best friend offer support, but the guys are basically alone to figure this out. Dennis takes things, is expelled, and is coached by David in being normal. Will the court approve the adoption, and will Dennis stay? Can a man become a father and a child become a son? You can get it from any store that sells DVDs..I got it from Block Buster previously viewed for like $6 or $7..

One of my favorite parts of this movie were it's little bits of realism. After the boy moves in, there is a bright orange hurricane fence around the landscaping pool in the backyard - California requires all pools to be fenced in. Also, I loved the "break it like you mean it" scene. Critics hated that scene because it was unrealistic, but what could be more real than teaching a child that they are more important than the things in a house?

I am an adoptee and I loved this movie. I have seen them all, movies about being adopted. This one really depicted at least on the bare bones what it is like to be abandoned/adopted. The length or depth a child will go to as they live in literal fear.
I figured out later in life that I grew up being afraid that I would be murdered. Murdered...can you believe that. I just thought that if my so called REAL parents gave me away then there must have been something REALLY wrong with me. So if I wasn't perfect or morphed into whomever I was with wanted me to be then I would somehow cease to exist. Not murdered in the knife or gun sense, but murdered in the infanticide sense. So...I completely connected to the child in "Martian Child". It was pretty spot on compared to most movies I have seen on this subject. Sincerely, Chynna |
