Potty Training + Preschool

Okay Moms of boys who have been there and done this, I need some advice!

Nick starts preschool in the fall despite still being two until November. He's potty trained (except at night as that is a biological function). But, by this, I mean that he is still needing our assistance with various things: wiping, putting pants back on sometimes and other minor things. The toilet at school is a normal BIG public toilet, without a ring.

So far, when we've let him stand on a stool to pee in our toilet, pants and everything have ended up wet. The teachers at school cannot help by touching at all (no help aiming or wiping) but they can help with buttons on pants, etc.

We've got a month and a half to help him ease into this standing without making the entire world wet thing. Any advice? I've heard of Cheerios but it's not like I can send him with a bag of Cheerios to school!

Help!

Just keep doing what you're doing...practice makes perfect. He's still a little guy, so it will take some time to get the aim down.

My boys are 4 1/2 and 6 1/2 and STILL don't make it in the toilet half the time - haha...actually, it's not really funny since I clean the bathroom.

Try with the cheerios at home, and my advice if he still has trouble by the time school starts is to take him to the rest room right before he enters the class, and then maybe at restroom time, he wont be so....ehem..."full".

My son's preschool has the same rule, but I have found that teachers in a three year old preschool are a lot more realistic than the rules may state. At mine, the teachers will help them to sit on the toilet or help them drag a stool over. That being said, your son might not be tall enough to stand over a toilet at 2 1/2. My oldest started standing at about 3 1/2. Although I have friends whose sons have always gone standing up, I'm all about having them sit until they no longer spray the floor or themselves.

LOL. Nick is, uhm, not tall. (Parker is my tall, skinny one. Nick is my shorter, wider one! HA!)

This growing up stuff is hard on a Mommy!

My oldest who is 8 used to sit when he was that age and by about 4 was standing like daddy. So when our youngest came along (4) had to do everything that big brother does. So at 2 he had to stand.....did he miss the toilet?.....all the time. Lots of practice and talking about aiming into the toilet not the floor....lol

Your son will do great. I think sometimes we as moms worry more and forget that overnight they get it.....kwim?

If he's still too short to stand to go, teach him how to remove his pants to sit on it backwards and go. He will learn to face the correct direction and will not make as big of a mess if he forgets to point down.

Well, here's my question. He's now fully going on the regular toilet. However, I was trying to teach him to leave his pants around his ankles for school purposes. The backwards facing doesn't allow for that...

but the forwards facing is creating in wet pants and underwear and just a huge mess.

I've got less than a month now to figure this out. I'm kind of out of ideas. He's too short to stand and no matter how far he tucks at this point, it's leaking out of the toilet.

Does he have easy to slip on shoes? if so, he can slip off one shoe and keep his pants around one ankle. That is a bit more work, though.

All I know is maybe he will learn to point down. Does the preschool not have a cleanable smaller seat with a guard? That would be your best thing right now.

Kids this age change a lot in a month. He may surprise you and be able to point down by then w/o leaking everywhere.

I feel for you, I really do. I've been there with my 2.

Wow...I own two daycare centers, and we do preschool as well. We have a small toilet seat that we put on the toilet for those who need it. There is no rule against those in Ohio. (meaning from the state) There is also no rule in helping children in the bathroom. Since they can help with buttoning, ect at your child's school, then perhaps they could help him remove his clothes and put them back on in a quicker manner. We actually have the boys sit until they get older. I couldn't imagine not helping them!!!! This is an actual rule from State Licensing in Ohio "Child care staff members assure that children are safe and sanitary while toileting or being diapered and intervene if necessary." Making sure a child is not peeing on their clothes would be considered keeping them sanitary, as would wiping them if they are unable to do so. It is sad that the world has come to a point where even keeping a child clean after going to the restroom is seen as a "risk" to some places.

When our fs came to us (at 4.5yrs.) he was sitting on the "big boy" toilet and pointing "it" downward. Well, as he got older I thought i'd tell him it's ok to stand...BIG MISTAKE!! This little chamer is sooooooo ADHD that he cannot stand and point...he gets so distracted that it's all over the walls, floor, toilet, and vanity!!! So, even at almost 7rs. old...I have him sit and do his bussiness. I'm not sure what he does at school, but he's never came home with "wet" pants or anything.

Just give him time and lots and lots of encourgement, and he'll do just fine.

Sometimes, we as parents tend to stress to much, only to find out, if we just let them do things at there own time, it works itself out.

OKAY!

We have progress. At home here, he can now stand on a step stool and pee into the potty while standing. This is great!

Except..

He takes his pants and underwear ALL the way off. He doesn't seem to be grasping the concept of keeping them on. I've got until Sept 2nd to get this concept across.

He does go into the bathroom with Josh. Should we just be pointing it out more?
