any suggestions for what to do with a two year old who feels no pain. She had a shot today and smiled and blood work and never even flinched. She is always picking at scabs, or making scabs or picking at fingers. Picking at nail polish until it is off. I caught her a few weeks ago with a clothes pin on her thigh and it left a bruise and welt and she never said a word. Our agency does not want her to see anyone because they do not want her labeled but my doctor says we better get help. Has anyone dealt with this? Is she tuneing out the pain or does she not feel it? I have never seen anything like this and wondered what I can do to help her??

There is a medical condition where the individual feels no (or very little) pain. I understand it's quite rare, but does exist. It may be worth at least checking it out with her pediatrician. Good luck!

Severe abuse can result in the feeling of no pain. The person learns to block it out.

Not reacting to pain can be attachment related...seeking out pain can be sensory related.

My daughter has pain processing issues due to brain trauma. The pain has to be really severe for her to notice.
I would get her checked out.

First I wish you the best of luck.. and Yes, The pain receptors also disconnect when kids fail to attach at birth and many other "natural feeling and emotions fail to connect" We thought we would have one of the 5 kids we adopted die before someone believed us that he was ill.. He did not feel pain or know if he was ill when we got him and I could tell he was ill.. 3 hospitals later and then waiting until our family doctor's office opened on Monday we found out he had pneumonia.... No one understands these kids and how their minds work. You need to find a goooood therapy center who understands R A D disorder.. The symtem of not feeling pain is often linked th attachment issues.. It is nothing you have done.. Our therapist told us the damage was probably done invitro....Please read about Reactive Attachment Disorder.. It is very serious and more families need to be aware .. No one told us!!!!!!!!!! Good Luck Take care and God Bless |

My son has a high tolerance for pain. My son 'learned' not to cry, because no one would come if he did.
My son is also an SI kid. So it could be that too. What I did was 'baby' every little bump, really play it up. He they realized that he could cry, and he could feel and it would be ok. I would comfort him. I would take care of him. But, he needs to be really pretty hurt before he really lets you know. He cracked his head on an entertainment center, needed 6 stiches. If he cried 5 minutes, it's a lot. And the only thing that made him cry at the hospital was being restrained - not the shots in his eyebrow! He was 3. He didn't flinch with needles either. Now he gets a little anxiety about needles (he's 7), but really doesn't flinch. |
