My 7 yr old FD has been with me for 2 weeks now.
She has problems wetting and soiling her underwear. I discuss it very casually with her. I tell her that we can't fix it until we know more about it. She asked for pull-ups and I got her some last night. But she's 7. They don't come as big as she needs (she's 72 lbs) and they're uncomfortable.
Anyway.... any advice on how I can help her through this? Any things I can try. I did tell her that pull-ups are not the answer, they're there to help her through this but she's not to rely on them. She said she's been having these issues for 2 1/2 yrs. (when mom's abuser BF moved in.) She has a psych eval on 6/18. |

hi,
has she been seen by a peds dr.recently?i would make her a appointment asap so they can look for any physical causes .if its not physical then its emotional.has this child been sexually abused that you are aware of?does she have accidents all the time or just at night?at night limit fluids before bedtime, make sure she goes to the bathroom at bedtime.how long had she been removed from that situation?it could take time.be patient.hope you get answers soon, and resolve this issue. She and her 2 1/2 yr old brother were seen by a dr. the day after they came to me. IMO they didn't do a good evaluation. If it were my child's dr. I would find a new one but I guess this is what you get for Medicaid.
No sexual abuse known. Brother's father is the abuser (to her mom) and he called her fat, stupid, ugly.... she said he wouldn't let her go to the bathroom until he and mom were done arguing. Ugh. I'm 90% sure this is psych. I work FT, she's in school, and when I get home I have five other kids to tend to so it's hard to keep on top of her about this. Her brother doesn't pee enough. One diaper change (for pee) all day. Ugh. |

Wet nights also
My youngest boy (age 7 really close to 8) is a bed wetter also. Have you tried pills yet? They can prescribe pills that is suppose to slow down the urine production. That didn't work for us. We took our child to a specialist and they did a few test but everything was fine. We are now on a "bed wetting alarm". We have good days and not so good days. We gave up the pull ups about 2 months of his placement with us. We did try an alarm clock also set at a certain time. This semi-worked. I do have papers on what they should drink or not drink. If interested, let me know and I can email you the list of items. Our medicaid did pay for all this including the bed wetting alarm.

When my son came to us at age 7 as foster, he had this problem, too. #1 only. Night and day. It took a while, longer for the night time accidents, but he did get through it. I learned to ask him to go to the bathroom before anything that might take a while - car trip, dinner - or anything that might be stressful for him. He would argue that he didn't have to go, but I would just say, "You don't have to go (how could I make him?), you just have to go in the bathroom and stand in front of the toilet for a little while." Most of the time he would go #1. I think this helped some.

Both of my boys had issues with this. They do make pullups for up to 125 lbs but that may only be in the boys sizes because my oldest was still wearing them periodically up to 90 pounds or so. His was more the issue of just not wanting to go where he was supposed to. He was abused in a foster home during the potty training time and had issues with even being in a bathroom by himself with the door closed.
3 years later and now I can't get him out of the bathroom. He sits in there forever. I keep telling him I am getting him a book to read. At least he can get reading practice. My youngest has different issues. His is a control thing. He will not poop forever. Went two weeks one time. When he was potty trained he was on Tenex and that cause severe constipation so it would hurt alot and he didn't want to do it - because in his mind it would hurt. Though he is often peeing where he is not supposed to and smearing - it is a control thing. But if I don't remind him to go before he goes to bed and monitor that he actually went he will likely go in his bed at night. If he doesn't go alot before bed I will wake him up before I go to bed to go again. This usually works. I am working on getting him onto a regular schedule so that he is pooping everyday. So, far it is working - that and the medication I got from the doctor. It is a huge issues when they don't go esp. for boys - according to my doc. I would take the little boy in again to see the doc because he should be going more than that. just my experiences

I have no experience with this what-so-ever, so please forgive me if I am way off, but don't they make small adult diapers. Some elderly folks are very small, and I would think you could find something similar to a pull-up. Just a thought. Good luck with them both!

one explanation/solution
Sometimes soiling is due to undetected constipation... Kids can have bowel movements regularly, but never quite enough... Then a build-up occurs. A 12 day regimen of laxatives and enemas (NOT FUN- and should be prescribed and supervised by your doctor) can cure the problem if done in conjunction with a diet change and drinking lots of water. As an added bonus, bed wetting might stop too as there is no longer the constant pressure of a partially full bowel pressing on the bladder.

our doc told us that if a child withholds poop then it will become hard and backed up, then it will seep around the edges and come out even with out the child knowing about it. OUr dd has soiling issues off and on. There is a product that recently went over-the counter calle doucolax that is a drink supplent that after a few days seems to help our daughter. As far as the bed wetting...I have a 9 yr.old still working on it. It is amazing to see the guilt he carries because of it. After he wakes up wet he is so foul to everyone around!
