Records Shredded After 7 Years?
I just contact the lawyer that handled my adoption in 1979. He told me that he did remember meeting my birth mother but could not remember her name. I think I have it anyway. The lawyer told me that all of his records and paperwork are shredded after 7 years. What does this mean for me? Doe this mean that there is no record left of my adoption? If you have any ideas please let me know.

The files should be on file with the State, Contact your State Adoptions Department and ask what steps to take to request your Non-Id info. |

Erica,
I would find it ironic if we had the same laywer. I was told the same thing after being told for years he would save it all for me. I am in Bucks Co near you which is why I find it ironic. Contact me if you want to find out if it was. What I found out was to get the copy of the amended certificate I have to contact Birth records in the county where her adopting parents lived at the time of the adoption. I believe my parents destroyed the adoption court records to "protect me" So I have no idea where to start and when I contated the lawyer to find out the county - he laughed and said he couldn't remember which state! Good luck Tami birthmother to Jamie 9/19/1984 Frankford Torresdale Hospital, Philadelphia PA |

Erica don't feel too down about the attorney because if he hadn't shredded them he wouldn't let you have them anyway. The county that your adoption was finalized in would have your adoption file with most of the legal documents that the attorney would have had on file himself. You'll have to petition a judge to open your file. You mentioned you possibly have your bmom's name? Why not try and request your hospital birth records?

Records Shredded after 7 years...
Thank you so much for your help. I've been searching off and of for about 5 years and have just now begun to get "serious" about it. I plan on calling PA to see how to start petitioning the courts after we get back from Vacation! Thank you, again, for all the help.
