Lightbulb Private Adoptions

WELCOME TO THE SEARCH AND REUNION MESSAGE BOARD!

Private adoptions typically were facilitated between the birth parents, the adoptive parents and an attorney. A Social Worker was usually involved to record the background information about the birth parents and to perform home study visits with the adoptive parents. Copies of the adoption file would be in the care of the attorney, the court of adoption and often times also with the governing agency for all adoptions for that state. Be sure and post the city and state where your adoption was finalized AND the city and state where you were born.

If you are unsuccessful requesting non-identifying information from the attorney of record the next step would be to contact the governing agency in your state of adoption.

Question Governing agency?

How do I find out who the governing agency is for
Texas? Also, are lawyers required to release non ID
when requested by adoptee? I thought this would be the case since non ID is allowed by law.
Thanks,

The governing agency for adoptions in Texas is:

Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services
PO Box 149030, E-557
Austin, TX 78717-9030
(512) 438-3412, (512) 438-4986, (512) 438-4516, Fax: (512) 438-3782

The attorney for a private adoption should release non-id but not all do. Most state adoption governing agencies in the U.S. say that an adoptee is "entitled" to non-identifying information but they do not seem to have the authority to enforce that rule.

I was born 6/13/67 at Union Hosp. in Elkton Md. The firm of Calvert and Rollins handled the adoption. I talked to Calvert, he's still an attorney in Elkton, he gave me the story that the records were destroyed by fire! I've registered with the Md mutual consent people in Md. and also with the ISRR. What else should I do? If you want you can e-mail at mikem61367@aol.com. Thanks.

Talking governing agency for Ny -07/31/65 F

I found out that both of the original attorneys that handled my adoption are no longer practicing. The one who took over in my birth state, said he no longer had the files. No one took over the NY attorney's practice. Where do I find out who the governing board is for non-identifying info in westchester county Ny?

Hi, Both of the attorneys that handled my adoption are still in practice but I still cannot get my records. It would take me more money than I have and an act of congress to get my records opened. I would love nothing more. I have just recently found out some more information.

To get non- id information I went to the department of social services and they give me what they had on file.

Question Texas Born Male 1969 Adoptee

I was just wanting to know what is it that your asking for when contacting this office Non ID information? and do you contect them by sending them a letter asking for it? and if you can call by phone what is it that you say to them ? I have sent an Application to request the information on which court my adoption was final through. My adoptive parent's say they can't remember the name of the Attorney that handled my private adoption so this is the only way I know that I can get my records unsealed, I have no information at all to go on in my search on my birth mother or father . Thanks a lot for any and all information on this matter
