OT: Nanny/Mommy's Helper (xpost)
For those of you who have nannies or have worked as a nanny, I have a few questions, I am considering hiring a nanny/mommy's helper for my kids from April 08- July/August 08. Primarly due to some issues my oldest son is having at daycare. I'm trying to see if this is an affordable option for me.
The nanny's responsibilities would be: Caring for 2 children (ages 2 & 3) Monday - Friday, apprx 10-11 hrs in my home Transporting (Pick up and drop off) my other son to preschool Monday - Friday. Caring for him apprx 1-2 hrs until I get off from work and on occasion a full day when he is sick. Fixing 3 preplanned meals and 2 snacks a day ( a daily menu will be provided - sometimes food will already be prepared it will just need to be warmed) Light housekeeping (Just cleaning up after the kids, making sure they pick up after themselves, such as putting toys away), Cleaning up the kitchen after meals. Cleaning up (or assisting the kids in cleaning up) any mess the kids make. Washing the kids clothes once a week, in my washer/dryer. This would include folding or putting clothes on hangers and putting them away. All supplies will be provided. Daily Educational & Fun activities including occasional outings which will be paid for by me. Transporting to appointments on occasion and Occasional other errands (This will be an every now and then thing, not a weekly or regular thing) Requirements/Other Information: Nanny must be at least 18 y/o CPR/First Aid Certified Willing to be background screened. Must have reliable transportation that can hold 3 car seats. You may bring your own child(ren) to work with you, as long as there is no conflict in being able to care for my children. Free meals are provided Doing school work/computer work is ok while the kids are napping What would you charge if you were a nanny or what would you pay your nanny? I live in Florida...My kids will be ages 1,2 & 3 at the time. The 2 and 3 year old will need full time care. The 1 y/o will need care maybe 1-2 hrs a day (M-F) Thanks for your help.....

My little sister is a nanny for a family in Jacksonville. She gets paid $11 an hour to pick up/drop off their 8 year old son from school. She is responsible for helping him with his homework, helping him with his laundry, helping cleaning his room, and she cleans his bathroom. If she wants to make extra money, they give her the option to dust, vacuum the whole house, and sweep and mop the laundry room, kitchen, and mud room. If she has to run errands other than getting him to or from school then they pay her mileage. When she was hired they offered for her to drive their SUV, but she did not feel comfortable in that large vehicle.

I live in California. Regular baby-sitters get paid $10/hour. Nannies start at $25/hour. With 3 kids who need continual care, plus the fact that you need someone who drives and has a vehicle suitable for said work, I think you're looking at at least $20/hour. Picking up a school-aged child and caring for him/her is much different than caring for three kids under 3.
You can check web sites, such as craig's list, to see how much nannies are asking for in your area. Good luck!

I considered a part time nanny for 3 days a week, but we live in such a small town, I never could have afforded it with what dh and I make. We could just barely afford the adoption. But what I did do, was to put an ad in our local newspaper and I'm so glad I did because I found another mom with an infant a month older than mine. Since she lives 45 min. away, I pay her $40 for 6-8 hours here and there when I have to run in to work. She and I are great friends now and we go to each other's houses for "playdates"...she still babysits Joshie sometimes when I have to take care of my mom and/or dad (both elderly). I guess that would be about $5-6/hour what I pay her.
I looked on some nanny websites and there was no way I could pay what those nannies make! Unless I won the lottery, that is! Blessings, Michelle
