OT? Baby Bottles, Plastic, Estrogens, Infertility?
Go to Google, click on News at the top, and type: baby bottles plastic.
Summary: A group of scientists have taken the very unusual step of warning the public about a specific chemical (BPA) found in certain types of plastics (3, 6, 7 - baby bottles, nalgene water bottles, aluminum can linings, dental resins, etc. etc. etc. etc.). BPA is a synthetic estrogen but it was not found to be medically useful in humans. Years ago, chemists found that they could use BPA in a different formation in plastics. Although studies have not been conducted on humans, the animal research is compelling. BPA causes reproductive problems (cysts, endometriosis, infertility), reproductive cancer, genetic reprogramming, and behavioral problems in animals. A sample of adults showed 95% had blood levels higher than the amounts that caused problems in animals. Infants and young children are much more susceptible to the effects due to their biological and neurological immaturity. The scientists noted that the pattern of results and the applicability from animals to humans is similar to what they found with DES in the 1950's. I spent about an hour reading this morning, then threw out my plastic food storage containers. Hello Pyrex At the very least, if my daughter were still on bottles, I'd be looking far and wide for glass ones.
