We call him BabyLuv

Hi everybody....
I have had my SIL kids for the last 14 months, the baby was 2 months old at the time. And ever since then I've called him babyluv b/c his birth name is just awful. If you called someone else this name they would be offended, that's how bad. About two weeks ago I realized that EVERYONE calls him babyluv, even people at the FC agency. I personally think it is the sweetest thing . But he is going to be 17 months and babyluv is the only thing he responds too. My husband and I are kinda confused we don't know what to do. We really don't want to call him by his birthname but don't know if we should keep calling him babyluv. A few days ago it was really nice out so we all went to the park for a little bit. He went to pick something up off the ground and I said no and called him by his birthname. There was a lady not 2 feet away from us and heard me. She actually called me crazy for calling him that. Any advice would help a great deal.

Erica

Is there another nickname that's more "name-like" that sounds like his given name? i.e. if his name was (forgive me, trying to think of an offensive name) Butthead, (as in Beavis and Butthead) calling him "Buddy"? Then he could go on to actually use that one in school.

Another idea might be if his initials make a "name". For example, using TJ or I once knew a kid named Jac because his initials were 'j', 'a', and 'c' (he shared his dad's name, so using this 'name' made more sense).

Thanks for the replies....I thought about other names that sound like his given name, but I don't know if its just me but I can't come up with anything. His given name is the horrible word 3 letter word some not nice person would call a gay person. And his last name begins with an H...... maybe you guys are more creative than I am......

I am assuming you mean F a g?? What if you change it to Tag? It is close enough that could kind of pass for a nickname. Does he have a middle name? Maybe we could do more with it...

Does he have a middle name? My father growing up was known by his middle name (and still signs it H. D***) or as Fuzz (His grandmother declared when he was born that he didn't have hair, he had peach fuzz). My husband's uncle was known as "whitey" because he was a tow head (when I knew him he was bald and still called whitey). I know a Harold who is always called "Pete", a Robert who's known as Milt (not his middle name). What would you have named him - call him that! My daughter's son is called AJ - his first name is his dad's name. (Must say though, FH doesn't quite do it for me.)

Why on earth would anyone name a child that?
I'm with the poster that said to just call him what you would have named him,

Nope no middle name, but his sister on the other hand has 4 middle names and they are all really pretty names. Even before he came to live with us, I ask her how she came up w/ that name. The reason was that there were so many kids in China who had the same name. She wasn't on any meds. at the time so I could see how she could come up with a name and explanation like that. Hubby and I talked about it and were gonna call him the name that we wished he had .

Thanks again,

I think that's a great idea, Erica! (and the posters who mentioned it, hehe)

Sure, legally he has to have the not so nice name, but that doesn't have to be his everyday, everyone *name*. I have two aunts who don't use their legal names (and never have as far as I know - the legal name was given them in honor of other family members, but they've always used the "nick-name").

I agree pick something that you like.

I have always used my nick name. Our son is named after DH so we use his initials - RJ - however we have attached Reynolds (not our last name) onto that so quite often he is called RJ Reynolds now if you ask him his name he will tell you RJ Reynolds. Guess we need to work on that before he goes to kindergarten.

Oh my goodness that is so tough, will SIL let you change his name legally or at least add a middle name?
