infant at halloween

okay, everyone is telling me I need to get a costume for my 3 month old. fine, but then what? do we go door to door? We could go to my college where I teach (they're handing out candy to kids), but college kids are all suffering some serious cooties :-) so I'm planning to avoid that. So what do you do with a new infant in costume? we don't have any other kids and it will be a while before she's allowed candy (and frankly mom will consume it long before she has a chance). Do people expect you to show off your costumed baby? I guess we could go around and meet our neighbors (just moved in late march), but I'm still at a loss.

any suggestions/comments would be appreciated.

thanks,

LisaCA

i don't know where you live, but my son was 4 months on his first halloween and it was unseasonably warm. i sat on the porch with him to hand out candy. i got to meet some neighbors out with thier kids and everyone got to see him in his cute dragon (sleeper) costume.

I would get her dressed up and get your camera. I think trick or treating to strangers would be kind of silly if you are only going with your daughter, but going to friends or family's homes wouldn't be (except in a good way). What about dressing her up and going to the mall? Not only could you then get the candy for yourself, you could have fun shopping to having the cashiers ooo and awe at your baby.

When my boys were little (babies) we just took them to my family's house and to a couple of friends houses.

I liked your idea about meeting your neighbors. It would be a good ice breaker.

Have fun

thanks for the suggestions. I like the hanging out and handing out candy, but then again, we don't know how many come by (our other house only 2 or 3 kids came by-sad). Since we're in CA and no one knows their neighbors, we feel this might be a way to at least get names (and promptly forget them:-). the mall is a good possibility too-never would have thought of that. thanks for the ideas! Now we'll be able to show off that bat costume we bought for her today:-).

Relax

Everyone likes to see a cute darling dressed up for Halloween, but you could do what I did anyway---when my daughter was 5 months old, we stayed home, read books together, and went to bed early! Let's hear it for inactivity!! lol

My little one is 2 1/2 months old. I bought her a pumpkin outfit. It is an orange sweatsuit with a pumpkin face embroirdered on the shirt. She looks so cute! We were planning on going to family and friends. They are having a Halloween/Chili supper party at our community center (for township) so we thought she could wear it there. I like the mall idea.

I'm not certain how much exposure my 4 mo son will get in his costume either this first year, but I couldn't resist. Bought it from one of the 2nd hand baby stores so dh wouldn't complain about the wasted money. They had a fairly good selection. He'll be a duck this year. Sorta an inside joke, since our backyard shares a pond with several neighbors and we have several tame ducks. Figure if nothing else, I'll greet the kiddies that come by w/ds in my arms dressed up.

hippiechick-your plan was my plan til everyone chimed in. For some reason, having a baby is similar to getting married-woe to those who don't conform! Just as our wedding guests nearly rioted when we did not feed each other cake, the idea of not having "baby's first halloween" is a major parental crime. My sis has already started on "baby's first christmas"-ugh. Apparently "baby's first thanksgiving" isn't important, probably since she's still on formula:-).

maybe we'll just hang out at home and show her off there, maybe make a name for ourselves by handing out the best candy on the block:-).

btw, we picked the bat costume because it was clearly the funniest one. The idea of dd in the silly bat hat alone has us doubled over. I'm sure she'll pay us back in her teen years, but until then, we'll be laughing.
