dumb question about diaper blowout
hi guys,
dh and I are new at this parenting thing and have a major question. dd, now 3 months old, had her first diaper blowout. we're using huggies that go up to 15lbs, and she's currently 11.75-12lbs, not too plump and 22.5 inches long. So we're trying to figure out whether she's outgrown these diapers. They look like they fit, but I'm wondering if those sizes on the package (up to 15lbs) is really true for most babies, or whether she just needs a new size. I know this sounds dumb, but we're kinda clueless. So do diaper blowouts just happen on occasion, or is that an indication of diaper size (or something else)? thanks, LisaCA

We have had only a few leaks and one or two catastrophic poop releases. These never seemed related to diaper size, they seemed to have more to do with how the daiper was put on or a long car ride. We never paid much attention to the weight given on the package, we just bought the smallest size first and moved up when the closures weren't as snug and the leg opennings were smallish. Our little one is trim too. Just get the next size up and try them now. You're going to use them eventually even if they don't fit now, so no money waisted.
IMHO, there is no such thing a stupid diaper question...

sugarbabysmommy,
thanks for the help. it is amazing just how many diff types of diapers there are and we are still trying to figure them out. when I last babysat an infant (oh, about the mid 1970s) none of these newfangled things were used. dh dealt with the diaper blowout and so I missed the "experience". he says it was out the back of her diaper so I don't know what to think. I like your idea, and so we'll probably go out and see what the next size and brand will bring. I think we'll see what pampers and others have to offer. thanks again for the advice, LisaCA

After five babies all in Huggies... It just happens occasionally. (More when my DH put the diapers on instead of me.

Lisa,
We found that weight was only one indication. There's also your daughter's length and overall shape. Also, she's moving more now. For us, switching brands helped - for instance, Huggies only fit Ryan well when he was in the lower part of the weight range. From there for every size other than 5 Luvs and Pampers fit him better and stopped leaks. In size 5 though Luvs don't fit well at all. I'd buy small packs of some other brands and see if they do better now that she's a little bigger. Remember that the cost of the diaper has not a lot to do with it's overall performance. My friend swears by Wal Mart White Cloud diapers for her little girl. HTH Regina

Pampers, pampers, pampers
Hi Lisa!
My DS is almost 9 months old and I swear by Pampers. I never really liked the Huggies at all and always had a problem with them leaking. I would give a try to the next size up, too, like sugarbabysmommy and Regina said, since we never really paid too much attention to the weight on the package either...just how it fit for his overall shape. Anyway, hope you find ones that work!!! Let us know! --Renee |

YUK! Blowouts!
Makena is a blowout girl, and we've used three different diaper brands, none of which could contain "it" any better than the others. We're back to the Target brand diapers which are the best overall and the least expensive by a long shot. She's had blowouts up her back (YIKES) and through the leg openings (ICK). I have found that the dryer the diaper is when the "it" happens, the better chance for containment. If your daughter is regular (as in time of day), make sure she's kept dry. Another thing to try is the Gerber plastic diaper covers over the disposable diaper. They just add another layer of protection to keep from ruining all the cute clothes. Happy diapering! Blow outs happen. It's part of having a baby. I have 5 children and have been through just about every diaper available, and there is always at least one blow out. A lot depends on how/where they're sitting/laying/standing when it happens. Unfortuantely it's part of baby lfe, but this too shall pass, eventually. SHelley

Lisa, if I remember right you mentioned your ddr is now heavily dooling. My son is just a little older than your dd and when he hit the heavy drool stage, we went from fighting constipation to very loose, runny stools. The baby book refers to them as drool stools and I understand why now. Leaks were never a problem before this, but we do have problems sometimes with that now. Our ds is pretty regular on time, so we just stay aware and change immediately. Doesn't mean he hasn;t surprised us from time to time though.....

tina,
thanks for the gerber reference-I'll definitely check it out. everyone, thanks for the tips. We figured we had a few months til the first of the blowouts:-). we are no longer so naive:-). as others suggested, we are trying several diapers. I ran out to target yesterday and picked up Pampers dry size 2, pampers swaddlers size 2, target premium diapers (I hope the work out due to the price savings:-), and Luvs size 2. We will also try huggies, the current diapers she has. I notice that they all range roughly from 12-18lbs, but the sizing is amazingly different! the luvs are huge, too huge for her now at 12lbs. I try to keep her diaper changed pretty frequently, but dh tends to see just how much can be put in one innocent diaper, leading to "issues". I think he just forgets, which is amazing to me. and sarah, I am frightened at the idea of "drool stools". Sounds frightening. She is drooling buckets, which is gross and interesting at the same time. So far no teeth, but we asked what supplies we should have on the parenting board and everyone was helpful. the idea that drooling is connected to scary stools is mindboggling. we are amazed that something so cute and small can produce something so large and stinky. thanks again for the advice, LisaCA

I've always said that the cuter the baby, the more awful the diapers. Our little girls are sure proving that theory!!!
Good luck with the Target diapers. I'm interested to know how you like them since they're my faves. Tina |

I used the target daipers also! They were my favorite years ago with my daughter. We also did Luvs, even with Barney on them back then! Those were my 2 favorites and I HATED pampers! Talk about leaks every morning when we tried those just about it seemed I'd take her out of the crib and her sheets would be wet and her pj's.
