Three Styles of Parenting
There are three 'styles of parenting' - the authoritarian parent, the permissive parent and the moderate parent. And these three styles of parenting have an effect of the behavior of children.
Authoritarian Parents are rejecting, inflexible, set many rules, value obedience, are detached and controlling and give harsh punishment. Children don't learn how to make decisions and are discontent, withdrawn and distrustful.
Permissive Parents make few demands for responsibility, don't set rules, hide annoyance or impatience and do not see their role as being responsible for children's behavior. Children are unhappy, immature, lack self-control, may be hostile and less oriented toward achievement.
Moderate Parents are authoritative, have control (balanced with warmth) when necessary but explain reasons for rules, encourage children to talk, value independence in children and feel confident in ability to guide children. Children are happy, friendly, self-reliant and responsible.
Many parents in my parenting classes say they are a combination of these styles. What type of parent are you? If you are an adoptive parent, do you see traits in your child which may be have been caused by a certain style of parenting?
