We have a 6 year old daughter who has been a real challenge to potty train. She will go for weeks at a time and stay dry all day and then wet 1x or 2x day for weeks. If we keep after her, she'll stay dry, but that's not teaching her anything. We are trying to let her choose to stay dry herself as nothing as seems to help. She has even wet our couch twice! She doesn't want to stop what she's doing to go to the bathroom and then waits until it's too late. She doesn't seem to mind being wet. She has had several uti's, a result of being wet I'm sure. She was our foster child and then we adopted her and her 5 year old brother. She had 2 previous foster homes. When she came into our home, she would wet 4+ times a day and she has gotten better. She has also developed a terrible lying problem too. I'm sure alot of that comes from fear of being caught and punished. We have tried so many things, like removing her from what she didn't want to leave, taking things away, time-out, rewards, etc. Can anyone help us out with more ideas? Thank You very much. She wets the bed at night also, but I'm not worried about that right now. She wears Goodnites to bed.

Have her tested for SID to be sure that's not a problem.. My neice couldn't stand the flushing of the toilet. It was too loud for her ears. She was almost 7 before she could handle it, and then the peeing stopped(my sister still has to vacuum when she's outside).
Otherwise, had her a bucket and a sponge to carry around and be sure she, not you, is cleaning up the messes. I would say nothing when she wets, just hand her the soap. Tell her she cannot sit on the furniture. It could very likely be for control. I'm assume you discussed this with her doc to be sure she's getting the infections from peeing and not peeing because she has chronic infections. If not, start there. |
