Did you adopt thru ?
A private adoption
or DHS and went thru Foster Parenting classes ? The reason I ask is we are suppose to start foster parenting classes first of next month- I was wondering what to expect- in the classes ? We were told that if you adopt thru defacts that most kids get a monthly supliment for you to help purchase things for them/ diapers, ect. And that they do get medicaid that can go along with your insurance- which would be great also- Can anyone give me insight on the classes and If they adopted like this and did your State do these things ?

If you do a private adoption then it's just the same as if you gave birth in that you acrue all expenses.
If you adopt through the state, then yes, there can be subsidies depending on the child you adopt. Not always though, and even if you do receive a subsidy, unless you are adopting a severe needs child, most likely the subsidy amount will not be very much. Are you asking if you adopt from foster care without an agency, if that makes a difference? Because if so, then it doesn't as far as I know. I adopted from foster care and used a private agency to mediate. That doesn't make it a private adoption though. Regardless of how you adopt from fostercare, it's still a state/foster adoption situation, not a private adoption. (at least in most cases...relative adoptions can be handled differently depending on the circumstances)

We've done both: private agency with attorney and going through the state system.
One is by far, less expensive on the money end; but there is more often a 'trade off', as I tell people. With the adoption of older children, comes the emotional expense of trying to help these kids heal from the abuse they've incurred. With private/agency/attorney adoption, is the monetary cost of paying for such varied things; but more often than not, the child is emotionally much healthier. Just depends on which route you choose to go; and which 'cost' you are prepared to deal with. Regarding the 'classes' your state offers. Please be sure to read and talk to other parents who have 'gone through the system', before making a firm committment to adopting older children. (And by this, I mean children older than 18months old.) It would be equally beneficial, to attend/join a support group of parents who have adopted special needs and/or older children through the system. They can/will give you more insight, than 99% of any state classes ever offered! Additionally, read-read-read....every book you can about adopting older children---especially those books about attachment issues. Sincerely, Linny Last edited by Linny : 10-02-2006 at 06:49 PM. |

In our area, all adoptions (infant & older) must go through the CAS, which is the public agency.
We are very fortunate to have adopted 2 infants through them, and we are presently waiting to adopt again. ![]()
