Amen to the potlucks...although as I grow older and have weirdly started having some of my mother's neurosis over food cooked by other people that you're unsure of their cleanliness in the kitchen (e.g. hair, washing hands) I only do potlucks with close friends or SS friends after church.

Oh haystacks are just awesome! Wow, an East coaster knows about haystacks.

When my cousin came to visit me back in the day when I was graduating from Academy and he was in college, he had no idea what a haystack was. I heard that this same thing happened to someone with a relative on the East coast as well.

My oldest son had it so much in academy he got tired of them,me NEVER !!!

Tommorow lunch will be haystacks so I better start preparing now.

Have a Happy Sabbath !!!

How funny. Sabbath is our family's pasta day after church. I either go to their house after church or they to mine.

Happy Sabbath as well to you too!

Mom always made homemade soup on Friday morning so she would have time to do the house cleaning and make the dinner we would have after church.

Kind regards,
Dickons

yummy....soup....I loved it when my mom would make split pea soup from scratch. Because of my commute to and from work, I go home in time to declutter and have an organized house for the weekend and then I always do my hard cleaning on Sunday mornings after my long run. (i'm in a running group in Loma linda)

winter months huh? we get rain during the winter and it's cold rain unlike florida or NJ in the summer where it just adds to the humidity.

I usually do tomato soup and a sandwich....either grilled cheese or for those taht don't do dairy, veggie sandwich. Very yummy when it's cold (well my version of cold...anything below 70 degrees is freezing to me lol)

I also do a frichik meat/potatoes stew and either eat it like a stew or put it over rice. That's good too.

Hot chocolate or tea is excellent during cold months as well. mmmm I LOVE tea...without anything. I'm a plain person (our family is cuban so we do do coffee) and will also make coffee but drink it black. Adding sugar and creame is more damaging than the coffee itself.

That all sounds sooooooooooo good.I am a big grilled cheese and tomato soup person, but I never tried the fry chick stew and I have to try that.

My placement was 2 hispanic girls. They were not used to the foods we ate at all.My sons girlfriend in Dominican so she taught me how to make rice and beans, another of my favorites....if I could just get it down right

Soups I remember mom making...

Split Pea with bacon yeast (?) for the smokey flavor (I think she got it at camp meeting -no meat in it)
Navy Bean (same as above)
Chilli (with vegie burger and beans)
Cream of Potatoe and Leek (made with milk)
Cream of Celery (rarely due to minimal nutrients)
Vegetable barley stew
Cream of Tomatoe (made with milk)

And then when we were done our chores after school we got to make the muffins to go with it, if mom had not made bread the day before.

Honestly, Friday night soup dinners are some of my favorite memories, no other family dinner night even comes close.

Have I said yet that mom was an incredible cook or that she ground the wheat to make the bread?

Kind regards,
Dickons

Pretty sure mom bought the yeast flavoring at campmeeting each year.

The other choice for the smokey flavor - that I use is "Colgin Liquid Smoke". Liquid Smoke contains: water, natural hickory smoke flavor, vinegar, molassses, caramel coloring, and natural flavors.

Kind regards,
Dickons

ah campmeeting....I remember when I would spend the summers in NJ, that with my mom and aunt's family we would go to campmeeting in upstate new york and to tranquility nj.

I know we have a lot of natural and veggie substitutes flour/bacon/ at our food markets. Again the spoiled socal person talking that I have 2 SDA markets either in Loma Linda or Riverside to go shop at.

I just received word of a potential match...going to a full disclosure for a 5y/o hispanic girl. I'm excited.

Dickons...your mom sounds awesome. While mine didn't do the bread thing (mostly because my grandfather was a baker and my mom is just so over bread) we had many hispanic meals (comfort food) on Friday nights that it too is still my favorite night of the week...since my parents live a mile from me, I go over there for Friday night still and they come over Sabbath afternoon after church.

congrats Dannie, praying things work out according to HIS will.

Also praying that things will work out for me soon !!!

I missed campmeeting this year, but we look forward to them each year to hear the great speakers and meet lots of new people. It is such a blessing to be in such a large group of people who all have the same beliefs.
