Mixing open and closed adoption in family
Hi,
We have a totally closed adoption with our son and are now considering an open adoption situation for a sibling. We are concerned that mixing the types of adoption in our family might cause some resentment with our son as he becomes more and more aware of the inequity. Does anyone else have mixed type adoptions in their family? Would you mind sharing your thoughts and experiences, good and bad, so we have some food for thought as we embark on another adoption journey. Also, if anyone knows of any resources or studies that address this situation, I would be very grateful. Thanks, Cheryl |

We have both types (closed, then open) in our family. I don't think it is that big of a deal. My daughter is somewhat jealous that we have pictures of her little brother's birth mother (and that we met her & know her name, etc). But I don't think that she spends a lot of time thinking about it. I wouldn't let it keep you from doing an open adoption---I actually much preferred the open adoption, although we no longer have contact with our son's birthmother. My daughter is 13 and son is 10, for your information.
