How do I begin a search?

I gave my son up for adoption through the Children's Home Society in San Diego, CA. It was June 1987. I know that he is turning 21 soon and I am wanting to know how to even begin a search. I don't want to be scammed, I think that it is going to be emotional enough I don't need a scam on top. I am thinking that it MIGHT have been an open adoption, but I haven't gotten pics since he was like 1-2 years old. So basically, I want to know what type of adoption it was.....and what is the best way to go about this "search for life". Any help is appreciated. It may have been 21 years....but it's 21 years of wondering, and hoping that one day we will be able to meet.

Thanks

If I were you, I would start off by contacting the post-adoptions caseworker at the San Diego Children's Home Society. The last I heard, they were still in business. (I'm a native San Diegan.) If by some chance, they are no longer in business, I would contact the post-adoptions division of San Diego County Adoptions (part of the county's Health and Human Services Agency). They can advise you on how to go about doing finding your son. You can reach them toll-free at 877-423-6788.

If you were promised pictures etc. and did not get them.. then IMO it was a semi-open adoption that was closed..

Good luck in your search!

You can also contact California Bureau Of Records & Vital Statistics. Have you tried the courthouse?! You could ask if it was open or closed. Hope you find your son. I'm an adoptee and my birthparents haven't even looked back!
Good Luck,
God Bless!!
