3 year old transition
Hey all, my dh and I will find out next Monday if we have been selected at committee to adopt a 3 1/2 year old little boy. C currently lives with bio aunt who is in her 60's and doesn't feel like she can continue to care for him. C hasn't been told he is being placed for adoption or told he will be going to a new home. What am I to expect? He has seen other children from the home go into their adoptive homes. How can help make his transition smooth?
Thanks |

Our sons were 3.5 and 4.5. We made a video that foster mom played for them every day, and a photo album picture book that talked about us, our house, their bedroom, our kitchen table etc.
I talked EXTENSIVELY to foster mom getting to know things about the boys and talking to her about their likes, dislikes, behavior triggers etc. I sent an album for the boys to fill in with their foster parents, and in it wrote that we promised they would always, always know and love both families (and have kept that promise for 10 years). We did visits for a week, then transitioned them into our family. We kept ongoing contact with foster mom (phone, eventual visits) and she was an incredible support for us and to the kids.

Thanks for the great advice. I finished the books today and make them filled with random photos of things from the house.
