allowances? XP

For those who give your kids allowance, how much do you give and how old are you children?
I have 6 and 9 year old sons and am thinking $10 a week is appropriate...does this seem in line with what everyone else gives? I have checked with the moms in my area and no one seems to do this anymore, so I need some other opinions. Thanks!

My kids are 12 and 13 and they get $10/week. I do think I'll be increasing my sons shortly, as he is doing more (mowing grass, helping with the animals, etc). For me, their allowance is fun money for them (buy packs of gum, CDs or Itunes), most times I give them some money if they are headed somewhere or out with people/friends. So they don't really need a lot of allowance and chores are just part of being a family, so they aren't directly tied... because they've learned if they help me with what I need to get done, it just means we can go out and do something fun.

Maybe to start, their allowance should equal their ages? then as they do more or do better jobs at what they are doing, they can earn more... or offer them chances to earn more then the minimal by helping out you or others.... (like $0.25 for every garbage taken out, or$1 to empty dishwasher or fold clothes, etc).

My 5 & 6 year olds get $1/week. My 10 & 11 year olds get 2$/week. If they got $10 then, given a little time, they could buy anything they wanted. I don't think my 10 & 11 are going to be big earners in the future. Learning to live without is an important lesson for anyone, especially them. They came to our home thinking everything in life is free.

Hi "green"....
My daughter is now 12 1/2. She is just starting to get allowance as her 1 chore a week is growing to several. She will be getting $5.00 a week (max). If she does not do everything, she will start loosing it 50 cents a pop. With her.... it could go quickly =O

She has been having chores all along, but I needed to instill in her, that she should NOT get paid for: making her bed, clearing the table and rinsing the dishes, taking the trash out, vac....., etc. Since she will need to do all of these things when she has a family. The Allowance is now for additional things.... gardening, poo-patrol, etc. My system may be flawed, but it works for us (at least right now)!

My husband and I were talking about this the other day and we decided that we do want to give an allowance and we were trying to decide on a dollar amount per week. We're looking at adopting an 8 year old and I think we figured on $5/week.

I do their grade twice a month (when I get paid). My 14 yo will lose part if his chores aren't done; my little ones won't (they're still willing to do what I ask). I have to "remind" my 14 yo. I also have a savings account for them and part of their allowance goes there.
