new to this group

We are adopting a little girl from Guatemala, so I usually visit the Guatemala forum. Although we received our little girl's referral at 1 week, she is now 27 months. As a older child/toddler, I'm eager to prepare myself to help ease her transition from the orphanage she has been in, to our family and our home. I've done lots of reading, but would appreciate any advice you may have on this. Fortunately, our process is finally moving along to a happy ending

Welcome!

I would recommend reading "attaching in adoption" and Parenting with Love and Logic.

Congratulations! Our daughter (who is now 6) came to our family when she was around the same age your daughter will be (E was 30 months).

I would recommend reading "Toddler Adoption: The Weaver's Craft" written by Mary Hopkins Best. I really enjoyed reading it, I learned a lot from it and it was on my nightstand for a few years because I reffered to it so much.

Hello,

We brought our older son home at 30 months too - my suggestions would be to treat her as if she is a lot younger than what she is. Also second The Weaver's Craft, and also Becoming a Family. Carry her in a sling or Ergo as much as you can...and enjoy!

I was going to suggest a sling too (it's early here and I'm still half-asleep). Also I would suggest (at least think about) putting her back on a bottle to promote bonding (maybe just once a day). I did not do this and reallly really wish I had. Just my suggestion though so take it for the $.02 it's worth ! Again congratulations and best wishes.
