It's also not illegal where I live to leave a 9 year old home alone... It depends on the child's maturity and is left for the parents to judge the situation.
I used to babysit my 6 year old sister and 1 year old brother when I was 9, however it was only for very short periods of time (an hour or so only during the daytime) and I had a grandma and an uncle living next door who were always home. Our backyards were attached by a side-gate.
