Adopting in Ohio

Hi!

My husband and I are in the process of completing our homestudy here in Ohio. I was wondering what other Ohioians adoption experience has been like. This would be a great way to network and meet other adoptive families in our area.

Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

Jenny

Talking adoption in Ohio

What type of adoption are you considering?

My husband and I adopted two children (ages 7 and 10). We found our children on a photolisting website last year while our homestudy was being completed. We were able to get the homestudy done before the agency went to committee. Our children joined us in Clermont County from Colorado.

Our biggest moment was the first time we talked on the phone to our children. My husband picked up the phone and our daughter said "Daddy?" The feeling is indescribable!!

Oh hey oh hi hello! (That's from a children's song about how they greet people in Ohio)

Melanie - you're not too far from me, down here in the southwestern part of the state. We're homestudy approved and hoping to adopt via agency. Just wanted to say hi!

Talking Cincinnati - burbs

Hi all,
We live in the 'burbs outside of Cincinnati. Anderson Twnship to be exact.

We adopted twice through Adoption Connection - a daughter, Claire in '93 and a son, Christopher, in '98.

Neither of our adoptions took very long. We do adopt outside the parameters of "healthy white infant that looks just like us", though.

This time we are doing a homestudy to adopt through Hamilton County. We are aiming for a daughter --age newborn to 5 years old and maybe one sibling.

We will see what happens.

Smile adoption

Hi all-
We are on our 3rd adoption. We have 2 sons, one age 7 from Romania through Holt International in Oregon, and one son age 8 months adopted domestically through private agency in Oklahoma. We are currently adopting a daughter age 3-4 through Holt from the Philippines. We live in the Northeast Akron/Canton area. There are many people adopting in Ohio. Our support group here has about 30 couples.

Ohio Families Adopting

Hi,
I do think that since Ohio doesn't have one big city (like Chicago) our state is considered small. Still, we have more "development" and population than many states.

There is a trade show that for a landscape/nursery organization based in Ohio. They make the claim that within a 250 mile radius there is almost 50% of the entire population of the USA. That surprised me. It was brought home though when I attended a "national" trade show that was smaller than our Ohio group.

I also think Ohio has a diverse economic base of industry and white collar jobs that we are less affected by the economy - not immune - just a little less hard pressed.

Rav,
anxiously hoping to meet our new daughter and ?

My husband and I are currently done with our homestudy and are awaiting a call from our agency to start meeting children. Nervous. We are both over 40 so we are real nervous.

Wink anxious and worried

Hey, don't be too hard on yourself because of your age. I was 36 when we adopted our first one almost 10 years ago.

My son's birth mom, when I asked her if our age was a negative thing for her, scoffed and said that she saw our age as a plus because she figured we HAD to more mature than her. She was 27 at the time of placement. So it is all a matter of opinion.

Our thought this time is to avoid toddler-hood -- although I love infants. I just hate that walking/climbing/oppositional time. It wreaks havoc on my brain. Many people can and do just fine with this stage. I had a friend who wanted a toddler and not an infant. My thought was that I wanted to fall in love with the child before I wanted to kill it.

Anyway, life is truly not full of certanities and guarantees, at least mine isn't, so make a happy reality for you and your family.

Rav

Talking hey there Ohioans!!!

We are in Cental Ohio here! Working with Franklin County and foster/adoptive home. We've adopted three, a boy and sibling group of two girls all in 2000. Hoping that this year will be the year we get to adopt the girls' biological brother who has been with us since he was two days old. He'll be two in just under a month.

We go to court tomorrow and hopefully PCC will be granted. I'd love to chat with any other Ohioans! It's great to have someone who understands your crazy but loving life!!!

Keep warm!

Thumbs up Foster2aadopt

Hi,
I hope that the court and the all the social workers will be ready to let you adopt your foster son. I haven't gone through this foster to adopt thing before. I am not very familiar with how long it takes to get parental rights terminated, etc.

I will pray that all goes well.

Smile

Hi,

I am a single Mom and have one 2 year old son who was placed with me in an open adoption right after birth. I adopted through a national Private agency. It had its ups and downs but well worth it. I too am in the Akron area.

Rav

Thanks for the kind words and support.

We found out in court today that they finally terminated birthmom's rights to our foster son. His caseworker is currently filling out the paperwork to transfer his case over to adoptions!!!

We are so excited but also knowing that the decision made by the judge was also a very hard one for his birthmom. She didn't show up for court again, today. We haven't seen or heard from her since last September, but today we heard from a third party that she was at a local hospital and wanted the case continued.

The rumor mill is saying she is pregnant once again -- we have three of her four children with us (the fourth is with her biological father) and they are all two years apart. Our little one that we just got PCC for will be two in two weeks. Timing is about right, so we'll just have to wait and see.

The road is looking a little clearer now. Just waiting to hear what adoptions has to say and where we will go from here. I know our homestudy needs updated as the last three we adopted were in 2000.

Feeling thankful and blessed!
Karen F.
