Dog breeds & Adoption?
I was wondering if the state of Ohio had any requirements on the breeds of dogs one is allowed to own in order to go through with foster/adoption(we would like to do both but mostly foster care & perhaps adoption if presented with the right situation).
We do occasional foster care for a local animal rescue organization & the number of pets we own....while not anything extreme....is more than the normal 1 dog 1 cat type households. We occasionally have dogs and or litters of puppies in our household for short periods of time. They are temperment tested before arival. One of the dogs that we own might have some american Pitbull Terrier in her backround. She is a mongrel so we can not be sure on her parentige. Our dogs are sweet, even tempered, well trained, and great with children (we have many in our lives). I wonder if anyone who shares their homes with a breed of dog that is typically discriminated agianst(due to hype, myth, ignorance, or irrisponsible ownership) can tell me more about their adoption experience and or their homestudies in regards to their dogs(APBT, Amstaff, Bulldogs, Rottweilers, Chows exc) Thanks. |

I don't have the answer to your question, but MAN I hope not. We haven't gotten to the homestudy portion yet. Mrs. Wesley and I have a St. Bernard. He's nearly 10, which is officially elderly for a Saint, and he's a complete couch potato, but he can be a little too affectionate for people who aren't accustomed to a dog his size.
From what I've read so far, home studies--while nervewracking--are pretty easy. As long you're relatively capable, you'll be approved. |

The homestudy process is pretty easy, it is the waiting to be matched that is ahrd
We have two large Golden Retrievers and we had no problems with them during the homestudy. They also love to greet people in a rather joyful way that can involve some jumping and licking but it was not a problem. We did have to fill out a form for that gave our vets name and showed that they were up to date with shots. That was part of all the paperwork you will need to fill out. If you have any other questions let me know, we are in Ohio and using an agency in Ohio.

I know a family with 2 (well socialized) pit bulls that have adopted children and there was no issue. My son has a Rott and he's WONDERFUL with their child. I would think that someone who cares as much about saving animals as you do, taking on that kind of responsibility (that is often times MORE than being responsible for a child), would be looked at in a positive light by an agency. As long as your pets (boarders) pose no threat to a child, I can't imagine them being an issue.

We have 2 - 100+ lb German Shepherds and a German Shepherd/possibly pit bull or boxer mix. We had no problems with our Ohio homestudy (we adopted internationally though but our homestudy is the same as foster/domestic adoption). We just had to show their vaccination records.

We have a greyhound and 7 cats at the time of our home study. The only concern was that the animals had been vaccinated.
